Caltrans would never do this, but we really need to think about decommissioning half or all of the Arroyo Seco Parkway and having ArroyoFest more than once every 20 years would be a good start

Biking in hilly, east of downtown (no coastal breeze) parts of Los Angeles the biggest sweat deterrent has been switching to e-bike with basket. Beyond that I’m kinda out of ideas. I want to hear from someone who has affixed an umbrella to their bike as sun protection.

Super happy about the Metro D Line expansion in Los Angeles ! And if you are too, you know we can channel that energy into electing people like @nithyaforthecity.bsky.social so that we have a Metro Board that actually wants to prioritize rail! www.nithyaforthecity.com/transportation

1. Lane trap is converting thru lane to turn lane, typically done to reduce # of thru lanes on the opposite side of intersection. This being a just rendering some of these details are hard to see. 2. See relevant MUTCD text 3. Agree, not sure why they went this route.

It was so magical to see the sudden ownership people felt of their streets and how people just walked in the middle of the street and families went biking together on streets otherwise riddled with car traffic. I’ll never forget it (and how quickly it disappeared)

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is posting before/after pics of some of the city’s street transformations and I am reminded we could have this in Los Angeles too. In fact we did for a few hours during ArroyoFest. If only there were political will to fully ban cars from the Arroyo Seco Parkway!

It genuinely felt good to preorder order this book by @brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social I look forward to their live show at Dynasty Typewriter, which incidentally is right next to MacArthur Park where the city plans to pedestrianize two blocks of Wilshire Bl to expand the park

In planning class at Cal (circa 2011 or 2012 I think), we learned how contentious that development was and how the developer really tried to make the building fit in. The building has lots of detail and the back changes architectural style and matches height of adjacent home.

I love my e-bike, it is a necessity to avoid sweating on my commute or when riding the hills of my neighborhood with cargo. But when I get the chance to pick up lunch or dinner in my neighborhood I prefer to use my regular bike.

Is there good shade umbrella for biking? Some bikes have shade for passengers which is great but what about the rider? I would love to take refuge in shade from tall buildings or trees but LA has few of either and sometimes you are stopped at a red light just baking in the sun.

It’s easy to write off Los Angeles as a car dominated wasteland, and in doing so forget about the River bike path & its river-oriented cafes/ restaurants, the transforming DTLA & its growing network of protected bike lanes and rail adjacent park space, Griffith Park & its car-free roads, and more.

With time it should get better to get around Los Angeles by bicycle. County voters passed Measure R and M to build out our rail network. City voters passed Measure HLA to build out bike lanes and bus lanes. Every time cicLAvia occurs, thousands of people come out to enjoy LA car-free. There’s hope!

For about 2 to 3 months in 2020, we had streets in Los Angeles that became pedestrian priority streets. People walking and biking on these “Slow Streets” outnumbered car traffic and on my local “ Slow Street” I saw more people walking and biking in 2 months than I have seen in the years since.

Unlike car traffic, I like it when I see people biking during my commute, stopped at a red light ahead of me.

It does all depend a bit on context. The Urban Arrow is heavy enough that the built-in rear wheel lock is enough for short trips or when the bike is visible. With my regular bike I will lock to an ADA parking space pole (without blocking access)

When I was thinking about grad school I was eyeing UCLAs Urban Planning program, in part because of Professor Donald Shoup and his parking course. I started doing the math and worried he would retire before I could even apply. I took his class and graduated right when he “retired”. He will be missed

Not the worst examples but see: “Defy urban planners”- a planner has little to do with designing a park path and most welcome desire lines! “Planners note commute times were shortened”. This is in relation to AASHTO giving a State DOT an award that planners likely had little to do with.

Funny, as a planner I only notice when planners get blamed for street design choices and standard developed by engineers. So much so that I once sent this meme to a friend. Grass is always greener I suppose.
Meme of superintend Chalmers from the TV show The Simpsons in the episode “22 short films about Springfield” in the popular Steamed Hams skit where Principal Skinner invites Chalmers over for an unforgettable luncheon but ends up telling a series of escalating and absurd lies to Chalmers.

The City of Los Angeles requires a public hearing before removing bike lanes and that is codified in the Mobility Plan. I suspect Manhattan Beach does not have similar requirements. They seemingly added a second traffic lane for only one or two blocks?
