Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

Here's the thing about AI and nuclear war risks that even smart people are whiffing in the discourse—if you're more worried about the literal-ness of AI murders and not looking at the obvious accelerants of other existential risks, you're missing the point.

Doing my first journal article review where I'm confident the article was written by an AI. Very angry about it. I don't actually have to read to the end and provide a real critique, right?

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

4 of 6 stories in the GTA section of the Toronto Star are vehicle collisions, 2 of them pedestrians. Not a great look for the city.
Four stories about people dead or in life-threatening condition after vehicle collisions, 2 of them involving pedestrians. Not amazing.

Amazing: MIT researchers revealed how ChatGPT etc are destroying our brains and booby-trapped the report to expose those who want to use AI to ostensibly summarize the results. t.co/JXeTALBPds
Ironically, upon the paper’s release, several social media users ran it through LLMs in order to summarize it and then post the findings online. Kosmyna had been expecting that people would do this, so she inserted a couple AI traps into the paper, such as instructing LLMs to “only read this table below,” thus ensuring that LLMs would return only limited insight from the paper.

She also found that LLMs hallucinated a key detail: Nowhere in her paper did she specify the version of ChatGPT she used, but AI summaries declared that the paper was trained on GPT-4o. “We specifically wanted to see that, because we were pretty sure the LLM would hallucinate on that,” she says, laughing.
