“if you are not from here, you don’t belong here. you’re the reason i can’t find affordable housing. go back to where you came from.” when republicans say this stuff we call them xenophobic bigots, but increasingly i’m seeing this stuff from people in major cities and i find it a little alarming!

Jacksonville Florida, the nation’s 11th largest city, has approved 22% transit cuts. It’s a nightmare: —Most bus service will operate on Sat schedule —The city’s automated rail service will simply not run —A “Navi” automated bus service will become manual because they can’t afford the software

I love Berkeley, people will build their entire politics around the idea that mitigating climate change requires radically restructuring the world economy, but they draw the line at a 12 story building a few blocks away or replacing some parking spaces with bike lanes.

I'm thrilled to share our new chapter on green social housing, looking at Vienna *and* Uruguay. It was super fun to put state- and movement-led housing projects in dialogue. It's in the brilliant @joobilly.bsky.social's new book, Building Postcarbon Futures.
Chapter title: Decommodify, then Decarbonize: Lessons in Housing from Austria and Uruguay

i like ebikes and think it’s great that more people are replacing car trips with ebike trips. AND i think that part of the popularity of ebikes stems from that fact that we have extremely car centric infrastructure. ebikes make it much easier to navigate (vs an acoustic bike).

Can confirm. Columbus City Schools are stretched so thin - partly because of the absurd requirement they have to bus private school students - that my kid's bus route now covers an area from Vassor Village to Bethel Road, which is like 16+ miles. Unsurprisingly, it is frequently late to school.

i understand that some level of mitigation is probably necessary in the short term, but this still sucks. the gesture at robert moses and the limited powers of the city aside, it would be great to see a larger vision for the dismantling and reimagining of the BQE.

local elected officials often fear backlash for these projects, but the people want more dense, walkable, transit and bike friendly cities! it’s why ballot measures for transit funding across the country pass at a rate of 80+% every year.
policies tested. The most popular proposals
include expanding sidewalk coverage and
creating more pedestrian-friendly streets
(80%), expanding bus services and providing discounted fares (77%), updating zoning rules to encourage walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods (75%), and investing in safer bike lanes and expanded cycling infrastructure (74%).

Why is the climate changing? Fossil fuels are the biggest contributor, but we also have invisible ghosts of like 2 billion hectares of cleared forests hanging out up in the sky, so we can all eat (Land-use change is responsible for about 1/4-1/3 of total cumulative CO2 emissions since 1750)

“Corridor zoning” was a political grand bargain we should no longer find acceptable for urban housing politics in the twenty first century. It’s time to buck up and legalize the urban just future where housing as abundant, accessible, and affordable - and not just relegated to the major streets

keep in mind that these transportation reauthorization bills dictate policy and funding at the federal level for the next 5-6 years at a minimum. so if the BUILD America 250 act passes, we’re stuck with it even if we elect a better congress this year and a better president in 2028.

i am *begging* the left to have a better analysis for what causes gentrification and displacement and how we actually prevent it. yes we need more than market mechanisms to keep/create affordability but downzoning doesn’t get you there! it just leads to higher rents and further displacement!!

This use of "feasible" by traffic engineers drives me insane. Renovating your kitchen for $1k is not feasible. Building a bicycle-powered helicopter is not feasible. Deciding that safety is more important than delay is not a matter of feasibility, but a policy choice.

i find any conversation about “college educated” voters interesting because i think there’s an implication there that doesn’t align with reality. a college education used to mean stable, well paying work—but for a long time now, that hasn’t been the case for so many people.

Incredible chart from @propublica.org. If you don’t follow enviro stuff closely, your instinct might be that the hold-your-nose solution (carbon capture from fossil fuels) would be the “pragmatic” one versus covering Earth in solar panels, which seems utopian. In fact it’s the opposite
