Idk, guys, but I think a textbook is better than Quizlets where half the flashcards are behind a login requirement and YouTube videos that are blocked by the school’s IT department.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics.

I do think AI will lead to a new Renaissance, just not in the "AI will make art and science better" way but in the "AI will cause a new middle age and we'll have to crawl our way out with a human-led Renaissance 2.0" way.

I think parents have come out so hard against ed tech in recent years not only because it's galling to be lectured on screen time only to have kids watch YouTube at school but also because we have to interact with 80 of the shittiest web portals and platforms just to do basic school things.

I just realized watching Three Men and Little Lady (1990) with my kid in the 2020s is about the same time gap as my mom watching Brigadoon (1954) with me in the 90s. Please excuse me while I crumble into dust.

I regularly review books online, and let me tell you, negative reviews are actively discouraged. If you didn't like it? Don't say anything. Less than 4 stars? Keep it to yourself. It's becoming a terrible ecosystem where we can't discuss anything critically or with any nuance.

I love that Emily Wilson called Nolan's The Odyssey "family-friendly" because it is! It's a kids' movie (complimentary). It has as much death and horror as The Mummy and as much nudity as Titanic (both PG-13s). I cannot fathom the R rating other than its *very serious. *
Image from Emily Wilson's review of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The highlighted part reads:

It’s a family-friendly audiovisual spectacle, like an elaborate Fourth of July fireworks display – and with about the same level of narrative and emotional depth.

*extreme youth pastor voice*: And so you see kids, when Nolan reveals Athena has been appearing to Odysseus as the murdured temple maiden, he is directly referencing Matthew 25:40, "So you do unto the least of these, you do unto me." And while Christ may not have revealed Himself to the Greeks.....

I googled "Owen Wilson tattoos" and "Actor Owen Wilson tattoo on shoulder" like 5 minutes apart. AI truly proving its worthlessness. Google really blew up search for this? They have to know it doesn't work, right?
Search for "Owen Wilson tattoos"

Google AI answer
Owen Wilson does not have any tattoos. The actor is known for keeping a clean-cut, ink-free appearance both on and off-screen.
While fan art and memes occasionally surface online featuring his face on someone else's body, Owen himself has never gotten inked. His most recognizable "feature" is actually the distinct shape of his nose, which was altered by injuries from childhood scuffles, a high school football game, and a motorcycle accident in his youth. Search for "Actor Owen Wilson shoulder tattoo"

Google AI answer:
Actor Owen Wilson has only one real-life tattoo, which is located on his shoulder.

The Real Tattoo
During a WIRED Web's Most Searched Questions interview, Wilson revealed the details behind his ink:

Design: A four-leaf clover.
Text: The word "luck".
The Story: He got the tattoo while in college. He originally intended for the text to read "lucky," but admitted that he "chickened out" at the last second and shortened it to just "luck".

Genuinely love it when my alma mater goes viral (even for dumb reasons). Yes, the academic logo is a pegasus. Yes, the sports logo is a knight. Sometimes the logo is (and I'm quoting my '09 alum husband here) "an astronaut that harvests oranges on the moon." Yes, it's very confusing.
The Florida Tech (now University of Central Florida) "Citronauts"

The logo features a man with an orange for a body, leaves for a collar and a space helmet. He stands next to a palm tree. He has a big T on his tummy. It's very kitsch and makes no sense.

I am not surprised UCF invited this speaker for the School of Comminication and College of Arts and Humanities (I'm an '08 alum). They also thought it'd be a great idea to send me this earlier this month: www.ucf.edu/pegasus/why-...
As a teacher, I’m transparent with my own uses of AI and the things I think these tools do well, like helping me beta test instructions for activities and turning my class notes into slides.

I don’t outright ban the use of these tools in my classes because doing so both fails to prepare students for workplace writing and robs them of an opportunity to practice a new form of critical digital literacy.

The handshake meme. One arm says Darmok; the other says Jalad. Their fist days on the ocean. In the Tamarian Language from Star Trek The Next Generation, "Darmok and Jalad on the ocean" means a new friendship or understanding gained through a shared challenge.

Project Hail Mary (the movie) has a *lot* of dialog that is not in the book (and a lot that was apparently improvised), and at first I was like "oh, was Andy Weir upset by this?" And now I know he literally doesn't care, apparently.

The listing for the Wolf Cardigan Pattern (Original Version) from Mary Maxim. The PDF is for sale for $9.99. In the quote post, it was for sale for $7.99. In the original post, it was for sale for $2.99, an almost 30 percent price jump in the course of less than a week.

One of the best details in this book is how the prairies before the start of the Dust Bowl produced the largest harvest the world had ever seen, but the Depression meant there was no money to buy it so children across the country ate dandelions while the wheat rotted.

It took like 10 years, but we still have Cape Canaveral. If we all just *don't*, we can keep any names we want.
Anyone thinking an executive order will make us stop calling something the same name it's had for 400+ years needs to show me Cape Kennedy on a map.

People from the 321 know exactly how well that usually goes.
