Jane Kenyon, “Portrait of a Figure Near Water”
Rebuked, she turned and ran
uphill to the barn. Anger, the inner
arsonist, held a match to her brain.
She observed her life: against her will
it survived the unwavering flame.

The barn was empty of animals.
Only a swallow tilted
near the beams, and bats
hung from the rafters
the roof sagged between.

Her breath became steady
where, years past, the farmer cooled
the big tin amphoræ of milk.
The stone trough was still
filled with water: she watched it
and received its calm.

So it is when we retreat in anger:
we think we burn alone
and there is no balm.
Then water enters, though it makes
no sound.

For those of you not in the DMV: the proposed Triumphal Arch is in a complicated traffic circle fed by several commuting routes & lane shifts (it was several years before I knew which lane to get into, to avoid recrossing the bridge). Adding drones/snipers will make DC commuting even more exciting!

I’ve going through old (really old) photos & rediscovered this snapshot I took in 1980 in Gladbeck-Zweckel, a coal mining village in the German Ruhr valley where I lived for 2 years: a chimney sweep, with top hat, broom & ladder who cleaned the chimneys on our street. #photography
Black and white photo, taken in 1980 in a small German village, of an old-style chimney sweep. He’s wearing the traditional black jumpsuit, top hat, and gloves, and carrying a long ladder under his right arm. He’s grinning (he thought it was funny that I asked to take his picture) and standing on the sidewalk next to a long row of German duplex houses (originally built for coal miners, and many retired miners still lived there)

The Mower
BY PHILIP LARKIN

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

Summer is over upon the sea. Elizabeth Bishop, from Complete Poems (1969)
SONG

Summer is over upon the sea. The pleasure yacht, the social being, that danced on the endless polished floor, stepped and side-stepped like Fred Astaire, is gone, is gone, docked somewhere ashore.
The friends have left, the sea is bare
that was strewn with floating, fresh green weeds. Only the rusty-sided freighters
go past the moon's marketless craters
and the stars are the only ships of pleasure.
