call me when there's an AI agent onto which i can offload my chronic sense of dread that just around the next corner is an existentially important task i've forgotten to do that's about to bite me in the ass. i am not interested in models which require me to turn the dread into tasks myself

Posting the dumbest niche meme I’ve ever made here, probably exclusively for @norfolkology.bsky.social and nobody else
An edited version of the Predator Handshake meme, showing two extremely buff arms labeled “nor’easter” and “king tide” clasping hands in the center of the frame. The whole image has been edited to look like it’s underwater, and where the hands are joined, the words “hampton roads” have been crappily edited into a snorkel to look all wavy and watery. The snorkel sticks up out of the top of the frame, making it look extra goofy.

This morning’s tidal flooding on the left (over an hour after high tide!! It got way higher!), vs how it normally looks on the right love to live in one of the areas most susceptible to sea level rise… that is ALSO an area where the ground is literally sinking due to centuries of aquifer depletion
A photo of a suburban backyard with a large body of water running through it. The water level is very high, and if you didn’t know it, you wouldn’t even realize there’s supposed to be a concrete riverwall there. The water is about a foot over the wall, when normally it is 1-3 feet below the wall. Another photo of the same backyard on a different day. In this photo you can see the normal water level at about two hours past high tide. Here, it is about 4 feet below the now-visible concrete riverwall.

For my birthday this year I treated myself to some very nice gold wire braid trim that finally arrived today I don’t know why I wasn’t prepared for the HEFT of this stuff, it’s literally made of metal, but it WEIGHS OVER A POUND. just me and my absolute fuckin slab of trim over here
A photo of about 25 yards of gold wire mariner-style braided trim, tightly rolled into a small roll about 5.5” across. It looks like a very pretty shiny gold satin ribbon at first glance, until you realize that it’s sitting on a kitchen scale that reads a honkin’ 1.144 LB

Victory shrimps 🎉 🦐
A lunchtime view: a pound of fresh steamed and seasoned shrimp in a takeout container rests on a whitewashed wooden picnic table with a blaze orange water bottle beside it. The table, which is at a tiny little seafood market (evidenced by the nets being repaired in the background) is overlooking a large bridge over the Mattaponi River towards Gloucester from West Point, Virginia. It is a crisp, sunny, warm day with a nice breeze off the water and it looks like a perfect place for a quiet lunch to break up a long drive.

Can't stop thinking about how younger generations seem to create new history for eras they weren't adults for and lack the proper context for. Blogs were quite popular, podcasts were a niche interest, and wiki has always been a useful tool that you still can't directly cite as a source.

I got to handle and study a really stunning antique garment this weekend. Sat down today to type up my handwritten notes and all of a sudden I’ve accidentally written 15 pages of a research paper 😵‍💫
A photo of a laptop screen showing a document in progress. You can see two very closeup photos of an antique textile of some kind.

Visible text reads is discussing, in somewhat excruciating detail, the two textiles pictured.

A photo of two grinning people standing on a dock, pulling on two ends of a rope tied into a fisherman’s knot at the center. The same two people sitting on the edge of the concrete riverwall and grinning at each other like goofballs. She’s wearing a white lacy dress and brown boots, with a flower crown in her long red hair. He’s got on jeans, boots, a white linen shirt and a dark vest with a boutteniere that matches her crown. In the background you can see a little garden. The happy couple sitting on their kitchen floor in their semiformal outfits with their dogs climbing all over them. Everybody looks cozy and happy.

One of my favorite tall ships (the beautiful, glamorous, magnificent Kalmar Nyckel) is in dry dock right now and seeing her whole keel like that feels INDECENT, like WHY are they posting this poor lady’s upskirt photos on the internet!!!! 😭😭
A head-on photo of the beautiful, glamorous, magnificent Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of a 17th-century Dutch merchant ship. In this photo she’s in dry dock for repairs, so she’s fully out of the water and you can see the whole underside of her hull. It feels a little weird, like we are not supposed to be looking at her in this state of undress!!

In an absolute triumph today, after 3 rounds of mockups and tweaks I finalized my pattern and prepped to cut The Good Fabric. I spent forever playing Extreme Tetris but somehow I was able to fit it all - the pattern called for 3.5 yards and I only had 2 😬
An overhead shot of a large piece of dark navy blue wool broadcloth folded in half and laid out on an ornate patterned rug. It has all the pieces of some kind of coat marked out with chalk, and you can see how they are REALLY snuggled up against each other with barely any of the fabric left unused. A large pair of tailor’s shears is on top of the fabric, ready to cut it all out. A close-up of the same fabric. You can tell from this shot that it’s plush, thick, and looks really soft, just a lovely piece of wool that was probably very expensive and thus very scary to cut. The pattern pieces are TIGHTLY tucked up against each other with seam allowances touching. A large pair of Wilkinson tailor’s shears and a blue tin full of pins is on top of the fabric.

I did all my tasks today & as a little treat I will allow myself to stitch one (1) buttonhole before bed. Right now each of these takes me ~45min which is WAY too long, hopefully by the end of this project I’ll get that time down 😵‍💫 I haven’t done many buttonholes by hand before & need practice!
A close-up photo of a greenish-gold silk waistcoat in progress. There are two open-and-closed hand-worked buttonholes finished so far, and another one above has been basted and prepped for stitching.

Very pleased with how tidy these welt pockets are coming out. Welt pockets are a little bit fiddly to begin with, but these were extra tricky because I can’t pin or baste ANYTHING that ends up visible on the outside of the garment - this silk taffeta shows every single needle scar 😓😓
A photo of a very crisp handsewn welt pocket, worked in a lovely greenish gold silk taffeta. The only visible stitching is two neat rows of tiny backstitches on the short ends of the welt. Another shot of the welt pocket, this time being held slightly open so you can see the bright yellow linen pocket bag secured by a cute little hidden row of spaced backstitches worked in silk thread.

I study historical textiles. I’ve touched 300-year old linen that made me emotional with how fine it was, that we literally cannot make anymore. One thing this article doesn’t mention is the impact of climate change on commercial textile production — fabric itself is worse now! 🧵
