In the vein of "public libraries could never be created today," a pitch for a calculator would get you thrown out of the boardroom. What do you mean, it just maths? Where are the ads supposed to go? How does it send usage telemetry back if it doesn't even have wifi? There isn't even a leaderboard.

Every movie, song, and book that you love was made without the technology that people who don’t make art are now insisting is necessary for making art.

While we're at it, might as well share Tom Baker's perennial masterpiece.
Interview with Baker in Vortex Magazine.

Vortex:What’s your one biggest Doctor Who memory?

Baker: I remember a man stopping me in Oxford Street once, looking at me with absolute incredulity; he couldn’t believe it. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ A man in his late thirties. I said, ‘Yes’. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ I said, ‘Yes!’ And he looked at me and in his brain he catapulted back in time and he said, ‘You know, when I was a boy, I was in a home for children; nobody wanted us, you know? It was terrible. And you made Saturday night good.’ And I went to say something to him and I could see him so close to tears that he couldn’t speak. And he shook his head as if to say, ‘Don’t go on, don’t remind me’ and he just did [a thumbs up]. Such a common thing, isn’t it, but suddenly backed up with an expression on his face through his tears that was a knighthood. It was a knighthood. Just thumbs up, meaning it was great, and thanks. It’s incredible, isn’t it? Just a gesture.

Coming around on a terrible new opinion: it actually rocks how much Netflix sucks. "Obliterating most of film history so they can better jam you into watching 90 seconds of an inert sitcom that looks like it's happening inside of a Zyprexa ad" is actually the gambit, here. It's cool to spell it out.

iPhone sales are down after they focus on AI instead of something people want. But Microsoft went all in on AI for Windows 11, they must be doing well— They’re losing market share to windows 10, their own operating system that’s 9 years old.

Earlier on, I asked a question, looking for a source for a quote. Someone helpfully asked Chat GPT. The answer it gave was 100% wrong. (The answer that humans gave was right.) Please stop asking it. It doesn’t work. And it doesn’t help. Bad arseholes want you to use it. So stop. And everyone wins.

Portion of the distant universe, including a gravitational lensing effect. This is the J0516-5755 cluster. Processed JWST/NIRCam data by @thocarp.bsky.social www.flickr.com/photos/19746... 🔭 🧪
A deep-field image of the distant universe, taken with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope. The image shows a vast expanse of dark space filled with countless galaxies of various shapes, sizes, and colors. The galaxies appear as fuzzy blobs of light, with some showing evidence of active star formation. The background is filled with faint, distant galaxies that are barely visible to the human eye.

The image is centered on a massive galaxy cluster, known as J0516-5755, which acts as a gravitational lens. The cluster's immense gravity bends and magnifies the light from distant galaxies behind it, allowing astronomers to see objects that would otherwise be too faint to detect. The image captures a wide range of wavelengths of light, from the near-infrared to the mid-infrared, which reveals a wealth of new details about the distant universe.
