Microsoft hasn't made it easy to gauge the health of its internal studios, but account filings submitted by Hellblade developer Ninja Theory in the UK show the company was profitable as of June 2025 (although turnover declined and operating expenses were cut by Microsoft during that fiscal year).

Only 1k+ layoffs to go in a 'reset' that is lasting months interspersed with the Kojima deal and pieces highlighting the CEO taking on support tickets. I would say all this does not fill one with confidence of success. But that relies on knowing the real end goal and that still seems up in the air.

I am saddened that more layoffs are happening today. We knew they were coming, but it doesn't make it any less impactful. We are losing this industry to death by a thousand cuts. I don't know what the solution is, but it's not consolidation, I can tell you that much.

My takeaway from this is that Microsoft is moving from a studio-focused model, which is where they based their acquisition decisions on what companies could just operate independently with no oversight (which was stupid) to an IP-focused model where everyone loses autonomy in service of properties.
