Overlay by Barry Malzberg My second Malzberg. Digging the pessimism, esp. compared to other sci-fi of the era. This is a bleak comedy about a psychic alien preying on the minds of four horseplayers at a racetrack in Queens, tearing them down bit by bet (heh) in a plot to destroy humanity. #booksky
The cover of Overlay by Barry Malzberg. It depicts a nearly skeletal horse being eaten alive by a vulture while still walking across a rocky desert landscape. Another horse follows. More vultures approach by air.

AI RANT Following the cancellation of three major debut book deals over AI suspicions, I decided to put my own (needless to say, 100% human-written) prose to the test. My detector of choice was Originality AI, and the results proved to be jarring, to say the least. 🧵1/5

Chapterhouse Dune by Frank Herbert This was a mostly satisfying conclusion to the Heretics duology and the Dune saga (as written by Frank). Honestly, I would have been fine ending my read with God Emperor. Although then I would have missed child Teg commanding an army from Streggi’s shoulders. 🪐📚💙

Barrier by Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin, and Muntsa Vicente The dream team behind The Private Eye is at it again! Barriers between people—literal, lingual, and cultural—frame this fairly straightforward story of an alien abduction. The art predictably fires on all cylinders. #booksky 🧵1/2

I reread the important Persepolis a few weeks ago and am gutted to wake up to the news of Marjane Satrapi’s passing. I’ll always remember and repeat her quote about the people of different countries being more alike than they are to their governments. We lost a great one.

Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert I love the centuries passing between books now, but a little disappointed at how unchanged everything feels all that time later. I guess that’s the Golden Path™. But the pacing here is sharp, even if it’s veering a bit into pervy uncle mode. 🪐📚💙 #booksky 🧵1/2

Just “finished” Blue Prince for the first time and it was beautiful. Zero hints. I resisted Googling so hard. This game should not be missed by adventure/puzzle game fans. I’m in awe of the design that went in to this. 25-ish hours and I can tell I’m only at the tip of the iceberg with this game.
