Books have a lot of birthdays and this is one of the many, the day I received funding to print Monkess And The Springtime Sonata. Finalized the files a month later and the books arrived on my driveway four months after that. It's been two years but it feels like six! 😅

Comics I Read 28) Settlers Of The Storm Worlds, vol 1 by Carla Speed McNeil This is probably going to be great. It's brimful with thoughtful creativity. As a taste, as a prologue, it's wonderful. It's enough, I think, to trust that it'll go somewhere wonderful and I do look forward to that.

Comics I Read 27) The Golden Fly by Battan, translated by Jocelyne Allen, lettered by Karis Page This short one about a stage actress who lives more off the lustful appreciation of her patrons than off the stage and her interactions with her maid is, well, too short I think to be effective enough.

Once again, it's been a year since the International Coalition Of Seths revoked his license to use the sacred name, and so this man should be referred to only as Heg, or Pete Heg, or Heghog.

Comics I Read 26) Lovers Of The Empire by Yudori Beautifully illustrated and fashion-conscious vignettes that gradually work to build narrative connective tissue between two teenagers in the tension between progress and tradition in 1929 Korea under Japanese control.

Thinking about Red Planet (circa 1995), the local multiplayer (up to 16 players?) race played at Virtual World, where you'd all get into enclosed cockpits, set you control schemes from basic through advanced, and race against each other. It was wonderful.

Comics I Read 25) Radium Girls by Cy. Gorgeously drawn in colored pencil, Cy tells the story of the young women who painted glow in the dark numbers on watch faces, and died of irradiated skeletons because of their work.

Comics I Read 24) Yotsuba&!, vol 16 by Kiyohiko Azuma, translated by Stephen Paul, lettered by Abigail Blackman As chapters grow fewer and farther between, it's always a pleasure to get a new collection of chapters. As per tradition, I read this to my wife and we took much joy from it.

Comics I Read 23) Cross Game by Mitsuru Adachi What a delight, what a treasure. Tremendous command of the form and excellent storytelling chops. There's a reason I come back to this over and over again. Anytime I want to see the strength of what comics can accomplish, this is where I hang my hat.

Hey @ryanestrada.com don't want to be a pest but I've a friend who's traveling and I'm wondering if you could rec any great comic-related destinations in Seoul or Busan? He's especially interested in indie comics from local artists.
It’s a long shot, but is anyone aware of any comic-related destinations in Seoul or Busan? I’d love to find some shop full of art-forward alternative comics by local artists, which seems to me like something that might exist there (I know comics as a medium are huge in South Korea), but so far my googling hasn’t turned up much

These were the first two comics creators whose names I knew. I'd read comics, sure but it wasn't until I got Power Pack month after month that I started to pay attention to the names of the people who made the comics.

I don't know what this song is but I also heard Outkast's Hey Ya for the first time this year (it's a fun song), so I don't know why I should be expected to know any song in particular. (When Hey Ya came out I was still almost exclusively listening to '50s/'60s jazz, so...)

Approached in a reasonable manner, these kinds of lists are fantastic resources. It's 100 shows that people like enough to recommend. How cool is that? And a list like this? Obviously just the start of the conversation. What will you add? Alongside these, what should we watch?

Book 63 of 2026: A Movable Feast (1964) by Ernest Hemingway, performed by James Naughton (2006) I was fooled by this one, picking it up and believing it was a novel. It is instead a memoir. Still, I treated it as a novel and as such is a wonderful novel.

I feel mildly cheated. I wanted to try some Hemmingway so i picked up Moveable Feast, which Michelle really liked. It's good but it's memoir, which is not really what I was looking for at all. Oh well, perseverance!

Book 62 of 2026: Catch-22 (1961) by Joseph Heller, performed by Jay O. Sanders (2017) Wow. Holy cats. That was a barn-burner. Very much not as expected. Yes, I thought it'd be cute with the wordplay paradoxes--and it was--but didn't expect it to be THIS funny and didn't expect it to be THIS sad.

Comics readers never ever fail me.
Reddit post asks:
What are some comic books/Graphic Novels that you think are on the same level as classical literature?

Answer: No ones mentioned any Marvel yet, so here are some that I think could stand toe to toe with some of the more pulpy examples of classic literature: Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk; Paul Jenkins’ Sentry and Inhumans miniseries; Deniz Camp’s Ultimates; Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars saga starting from his run on the Fantastic Four, going into his runs on the Avengers and New Avengers books, and culminating in Secret Wars

Answer: Recent, nothing tops Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples. Absolute top-tier comic.

If you want to go to the big two (shudder) than Immortal Hulk was actually quite good, but not on the level of Saga.
