One aspect of research funding that it took me a while as a prof to appreciate: Someone who directs significant funding can shape the questions researchers investigate, *even researchers they don't directly fund*. Why? Because many researchers chase citations, and better-funded areas get cited more.

it’s good for social stability when, while the overall economy is doing OK, a huge number of educated professionals and students who held or wanted jobs they were passionate about have suddenly been pushed into unemployment and precarity by a government that’s openly hostile to them, right

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

Social media rewards identity signaling. It’s easy to grow an audience by telling your followers how “good” they are while attacking the “bad” group. Science communication isn’t immune to this dynamic.

OPINION AND ORDER GRANTING MOTION TO DISMISS INDICTMENT ECF NO. 60)
On September 25, 2025, Lindsey Halligan, a former White House aide with no prior prosecutorial experience, appeared before a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Having been appointed Interim U.S. Attorney by the Attorney General just days before, Ms.
Halligan secured a two-count indictment charging former FBI Director James B. Comey, Jr. with
making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
Mr. Comey now moves to dismiss the indictment on the ground that Ms. Halligan, the sole
prosecutor who presented the case to the grand jury, was unlawfully appointed in violation of 28
U.S.C. § 546 and the Constitution's Appointments Clause. As explained below, I agree with Mr.
Comey that the Attorney General's attempt to install Ms. Halligan as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid. And because Ms. Halligan had no lawful authority to
present the indictment, I will grant Mr. Comey's motion and dismiss the indictment without

In May, Business Insider laid off 21 percent of its workforce. In her layoff letter, Business Insider’s CEO Barbara Peng said “there’s a huge opportunity for companies who harness AI first.” She told the remaining employees there that they are “fully embracing AI,” “we are going all-in on AI,” and said “over 70 percent of Business Insider employees are already using Enterprise ChatGPT regularly (our goal is 100%), and we’re building prompt libraries and sharing everyday use cases that help us work faster, smarter, and better.” She added they are “exploring how AI can boost operations across shared services, helping us scale and operate more efficiently.”

Last year, Hearst Newspapers executives, who operate 78 newspapers nationwide, told the company in an all-hands meeting audio obtained by 404 Media that they are “leaning into [AI] as Hearst overall, the entire corporation.” Examples given in the meeting included using AI for slide decks, a “quiz generation tool” for readers, translations, a tool called Dispatch, which is an email summarization tool, and a tool called “Assembly,” which is “basically a public meeting monitor, transcriber, summarizer, all in one. What it does is it goes into publicly posted meeting videos online, transcribes them automatically, [and] automatically alerts journalists through Slack about what’s going on and links to the transcript.”

And at the industry level, I’ve engaged in conversations about how generative AI will likely upend the information ecosystem. We can already see how it’s changing search, research, and writing; how much more will it revolutionize how people find, consume, and engage with news? Understanding those changes, and staying ahead of them, may be one of the most critical challenges we face.

Know that, in some newsrooms, LLMs are already changing the game

New York is having a bumper week for renewables announcements. Just in, the state announces final contracts for 26 wind, solar, and (repowered) hydro projects totaling 2.5 GW. Some are already under construction and all are supposed to be done by 2029
[NYSERDA Press release, 5/21/25]

GOVERNOR HOCHUL ANNOUNCES EXECUTED CONTRACTS FOR 26 LARGE-SCALE, LAND-BASED RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS

Projects to Provide More Than 2.5 Gigawatts of Locally-Produced Clean Energy and Generate More Than $6 Billion in Private Investment

Reinforces the State’s Commitment to Equitable Clean Energy Development, Grid Resiliency, and Economic Development

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that contracts have been executed for 26 large-scale land-based renewable energy projects that, upon completion, will provide more than 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy, enough to power more than 670,000 homes throughout New York State. These projects are expected to create more than 1,900 near-term, family-supporting jobs and generate more than $6 billion in private investment while reinforcing the State’s commitment to the development of locally-produced clean energy, grid resiliency and economic development.

“New York is creating competitive opportunities for the clean energy industry, and we could not do this without the shared commitment of our private partners,” Governor Hochul said. “The advancement of renewable energy is part of the foundation of New York’s plan to transform to a zero-emission electricity system and continue our green economy’s momentum forward.”

These contracted awards are the result of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) 2024 Tier 1 Renewable Energy Standard solicitation. Once constructed, the projects will produce approximately 5,000 gigawatt-hours annually–which is enough to power more than 670,000 homes–provide public health benefits resulting from reduced exposure to harmful air pollutants; and provide more than $300 million in commitments to disadvantaged communities, as defined by the Climate Justice Working Group, from long-term payments to community benefit funds. [cont'd]

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “As New York transitions to a clean energy economy, we celebrate these 26 projects and the significant energy they will provide. New York remains an innovator in accelerating clean energy projects, advancing clean energy jobs, and spurring economic development opportunities for businesses and our local communities all across our state.”

Contracted projects include:

Capital Region

    Dolan Solar, Washington County
    Hawthorn Solar, Rensselaer County
    Somers Solar, Washington County
Shepherd's Run Solar Project, Columbia County

Central New York

    Agricola Wind, Cayuga County
Homer Solar Energy Center, Cortland County

Finger Lakes

    Highbanks Solar, Livingston County
Horseshoe Solar Energy Center, Livingston and Monroe Counties
Valcour Bliss Windpark, Wyoming County [cont'd]

 Mohawk Valley

    Dolgeville Hydro, Herkimer County
    Flat Creek Solar, Montgomery County
Mill Point Solar I, Montgomery County
    Skyline Solar, Oneida County

North Country

    ELP Ticonderoga Solar, Essex County
Fort Covington Solar Farm, Franklin County
Lyons Falls Mill Repower, Lewis County
Tracy Solar Energy Center, Jefferson County
Two Rivers Solar Farm, St. Lawrence County
    Valcour Altona Windpark, Clinton County
    Valcour Clinton Windpark, Clinton County

Southern Tier

    High Bridge Wind, Chenango County
    Prattsburgh Wind Farm, Steuben County
    Yellow Barn Solar, Tompkins County

Western New York

Moraine Solar Energy Center, Allegany County
    South Ripley Solar, Chautauqua County
    York Run Solar, Chautauqua County

The payments under the contracted projects will only begin once projects are constructed and begin delivering renewable energy to New York after obtaining all required permits and approvals. Several projects have already commenced construction activities. All projects are expected to be operational by 2029. Map of the wind, solar, and hydro projects across New York state
