More plausible that the reverse is true: Manhattan Institute’s more technical scholarship is what lends mainstream respectability to an unreconstructed racist like Christopher Rufo and gains him regular access to, say, the New York Times.

A while ago I got pushback from some other urbanists on here for arguing that the Manhattan Institute’s main function is to mainstream racism. But the idea that their work on fairly technical urban policy matters is as politically significant as what Rufo is doing just doesn’t pass the smell test.

Similarly, people keep asking me if immigration will get much better if Democrats retake Congress and the answer is "probably not." ICE is largely insulated from Congressional pushback (the 2026 budget reconciliation bill funded them through 2029) and hearings and subpoenas can only do so much.
