The C-value paradox: The Japanese canopy plant (Paris japonica) has a genome 50 TIMES LARGER than a human (150 billion base pairs to our 3.3 billion base pairs). If all DNA is functional, why does a plant in Japan's alpine region need 50 times more of it than you? (📷:alpsdake, wikimedia)

The giraffe weevil (Trachelophorus giraffa) is native to the forests of Madagascar. They show a strong sexual dimorphism: males (left) have elongated necks compared to females (right). This long neck is used in mating displays and challenging other males.
Giraffe-necked weevils (Trachelophorus giraffae) are almost invariably found on the leaves of Dichaetanthera cordifolia, on which they feed. The male's long 'neck' is adapted for rolling a leaf to make an egg case in which the female (which has a shorter neck) lays a single egg.

wrong. But the same paper had given them another result that they liked much better. The team was going all in on yogurt. With a growing reputation as a boon for microbiomes, yogurt was the anti-ice-cream-the healthy person's dairy treat.
"Higher intake of yogurt is associated with a reduced risk" of type 2 diabetes, "whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy are not," the 2014 paper said. "The conclusions weren't exactly accurately written," acknowledged Dariush Mozaffarian, the dean of policy at Tufts's nutrition school and a co-author of the paper, when he revisited the data with me in an interview. "Saying no foods were associated-_ice cream was associated."

Turkey Vultures appear black from a distance but up close are dark brown with a featherless red head and pale bill. While most of their body and forewing are dark, the undersides of the flight feathers (along the trailing edge and wingtips) are paler, giving a two-toned appearance. The vulture pictured poses in the shade under the pine canopy while eyeing the photographer warily since he should not be up here with freaking vultures.
