this is a well-reported piece with an awful lot written between the lines, and one of the things that jumps out at me is just how ill-informed these people are. the trucker, his partner, his mother — they can’t even agree *amongst themselves* on a shared understanding of events

The actual solution to less daylight in the winter is to keep the clock the same but make the standard workday 1 hour shorter. When everyone gets sick of the change every year, make it permanent 🙏

In 1965, Studs Terkel broadcast a panel discussion on ending capital punishment from the University of Chicago and it's all really the same stuff anyone could say now. It's fascinating as a time capsule too, though, and worth listening to. studsterkel.wfmt.com/programs/pan...

At this point I've unfollowed almost everyone I found interesting or funny from Olde Twitter days for basically going insane, and it makes it feel like this website is bad, but we all know it's really just that Trump is bad. It doesn't help that he literally does not seem real.

Baudrillard: "It is no longer a question of imitation, nor of reduplication, nor even of parody. It is rather a question of substituting signs of the real for the real itself... Never again will the real have to be produced: this is the vital function of the model in a system of death"

It's really worrisome how much of American society is a steady jog on the hedonic treadmill. People will quickly expand their level of consumption to whatever they can afford (on credit), it objectively does not make them happier, and then when they're asked to give anything up it's a crisis

I actually want to vomit. There is nothing that can redeem this moment. We are living through a regime that is victimizing immigrants in at least as bad a way as early Nazi Germany victimized Jews. We all fucking know. We, all of us, live in the Zone of Interest.

wingnut centrists have been accusing el-sayed of "debasing the memory of 9/11" because he compared 9/11 to covid and called for a commensurate response. set aside the rank islamophobia of the accusation: it would be impossible to debase the memory of 9/11 more than it already has been.

On 9/11, my friend and I were walking home from the school bus. Her mom was waiting on the lawn for us and started to say, "Beth, your mom called. Your uncle-" and my friend tossed her body in front of mine, arms outstretched, yelling "NO!!!!" "- your uncle's fine. Kate, what are you doing?"

the existential crises we’re experiencing around AI reminds me a lot of a short story by Ted Chiang called “What’s expected of us” that was originally published in Nature magazine in 2005 it’s only 1 page, highly recommend reading it if you haven’t already ia800209.us.archive.org/16/items/Ted...
ind that you can't. If you try to press the button without having seen a flash,
the flash
immediately appears, and no matter how fast you move, you never push the button until a second has elapsed. If you wait for the flash, intending to keep from pressing the button afterwards, the flash never appears. No matter what you do, the light always precedes the button press. There's no way to fool a Predictor.
The heart of each Predictor is a circuit with a negative time delay — it sends a sig nal back in time. The full implications of the technology will become apparent later, when negative delays of greater than a second are achieved, but that's not what this warning is about. The immediate problem is that Predictors demonstrate that there's no such thing as free will.
There have always been arguments showing that free will is an illusion, some based on hard physics, others based on pure logic. Most people agree these arguments are irrefutable, but no one ever really accepts the conclusion. The experience of having free will is too powerful for an argument to overrule. What it takes is a demonstration, and that's what a Predictor provides.
Typically, a person plays with a Predictor compulsively for several days, showing it to friends, trying various schemes to outwit the device. The person may appear to lose interest in it, but no one can forget what it means - over the following weeks, the implications of an immutable future sink in. Some people, realizing that their choices don't matter, refuse to make any choices at all. Like a legion of Bartleby the Scriveners, they no longer engage in spontaneous action. Eventually, a third of those who play with a Predictor must be hospitalized because they won't feed themselves.
The end state is akinetic mutism, a kind of waking coma. They'll track motion with their eyes, and change position occasion-ally; but nothing more. The ability to move remains, but the motivation is gone.
Before people started playing with Pre-dictors, ak…

Seeing people talk about the Mercator projection and TIL Web Mercator doesn't even preserve anything. Surely the computational efficiency is trivial now?? But maybe not, since the public expectation with more power is for more and more data and not "at last we can project this differently"

We are a broken nation. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians were living and working legally, paying taxes, and contributing. Haiti remains wholly unsafe. But Trump hates Haitians, and the White House wanted videos of Black people in chains, so they stripped them of status and turned on the cameras.

I think this thread shows that autism is the main bsky neurodiversity vs anxiety (or often similar OCD, ADHD etc) where a bad social interaction will shut you down and cause indefinite avoidance. There is no thing I own or do that I care about more than I care about not getting yelled at by a guy.

Nothing from the cliche side of "woke" should ever have been in the newspaper, but if you knew anyone who ever spoke or behaved that way, it made every social interaction fraught until you resented and avoided them, which is like ... What else to call that other than disintegrating a social fabric
