Captain Haddock looking very frazzled, saying, “What a week, huh?”
Tintin leans into the frame and says, “Captain, it’s Wednesday.”
Snowy aka Milou is very excited about the drink he has found.

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

One year during undergrad, I found HPMoR about a week before finals, and instead of writing good papers, I read all of HPMoR. Not because I liked the rationalist ideas, but because I liked Harry Potter fanfiction when I was stressed. I fucking hate that this worked out in the long run.

Take it up with the writers that “what we owe to each other” is the most memorable text of the 20th century for the show. Season two could have used a whole-ass banality of evil episode, à la the trolley problem.

Well yeah, because if you have two copies you don't need to fight over who rereads Scanlon's "What we owe to each other" first.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

When I was 9, I broke my arm. In my room pre-op, there was a (very bad) superhero joke book. I can only remember one. Which heroes do lawn care? Only the Shadow mows. Ever since then, I’m a sucker for a good Shadow tagline joke, and the character, in that order.

Less true with every year that the monoculture dissolves though. I’m watching Animaniacs with the kiddo, and it’s definitely incorporating lots of 90s vibes, while also keeping standard cultural references alive and well, but I struggle to think of current stuff (since 2015) doing the same work.

There’s a phrase I picked up from a book a while ago, the carrier wave for culture. That book was mostly using it to discuss mythology. I mostly use it to discuss cartoons from the 1950s and 1960s.

There’s a reasonable chance that one of the phonogram issues is the most important 25 pages I’ve ever read in my life. And while that wasn’t 20 years ago, it was half a lifetime ago, now. So here’s to where it all began.

It's only now I remember today is the 20th anniversary of this coming out. There's not really words, though I'm sure I'll find a few thousand for the newsletter. "We are twice as far from Rue Britannia as Rue Britannia was from Britpop" is certainly a thought. The other is: thank you, McK.

Man, two all-timers in the space of a month. Nice job, New Yorker cartoon editors. The idea of this one is brilliant, but the execution is maybe even more so—getting the figure in the coffin to read both ways like it’s supposed to is something.
A cartoon by Paul Noth from the most recent New Yorker. It shows a coffin. On one side is an anthropomorphic rabbit in windows weeds. On the other a duck in same. In the coffin is a duck, or a rabbit, depending on how you look at the head, which is the simple head from the classic “is it a duck or a rabbit?” drawing.

I have been thinking about how happy this fish is for four days.
A cartoon by Dan Misdea from the most recent issue of the New Yorker that shows a fishbowl with a folded sign in front of it that says “Beware of fish.” In the bowl is a finger, severed at the second knuckle, lying on the bottom of the bowl, and fish, significantly smaller than the section of finger, who looks like he’s achieved his every goal.

🚨 For nearly two years - and even now, depending on the day and model - AI models could tell you all about bixonimania, a totally made-up disease in a paper funded by “the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation". My @nature.com story on AI's fallibility in medicine www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real
Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

Working with my 2022 and 24 data, about 31% of Millennials born between 1981 and 1989 have no religious affiliation. Within that group, about 17% identify as atheist, 22% agnostic, 12% something else, and 49% nothing in particular. But that's just the label of religion, not faith, e.g. belief in God
