4/5 From zebrafish to mammals, and across more than 400 million of years of evolution, TGF-b signaling not only helps a progenitor become a microglia, but also helps it remain one. Quite remarkable! 🧠 🐟🔬

3/5 Our work now answers this question. To make a long story short, we show that Tgfbr signaling acts at two critical stages of microglia development: first, helping microglia progenitors initiate the microglial differentiation program, and later, maintaining microglial identity post differentiation

2/5 🤔While we and others previously showed that microglia ontogeny is highly conserved in the zebrafish embryo, both in terms of cellular origin and the genetic programs that drive it, a major question remained: is the key role of TGF-b signaling in microglia ontogeny also shared across vertebrates?

1/5 📢New paper from our group! We are excited to share our latest work, now published in Cell Reports ✨ What's new? Using zebrafish, a non-mammalian vertebrate model, we show that the requirement for TGF-b signaling in microglia development has been maintained throughout vertebrate evolution.

Tgf-β receptor signaling cell-intrinsically controls conserved microglia homeostatic maturation during zebrafish development
In this study, Miserocchi et al. find that Tgf-β receptor signaling is a conserved, cell-intrinsic regulator of microglial differentiation in zebrafish. Disrupting this pathway blocks acquisition and ...

Today I'm posting a blog about another ridiculous antibody blunder. Dozens of papers in the senescence and ageing field have mistakenly used an antibody for E. coli β-galactosidase when trying to stain for the human protein with the same name. forbetterscience.com/2026/07/21/d...

Direct microglia replacement reveals pathologic and therapeutic contributions of brain macrophages to a monogenic neurological disease
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant is the gold standard for treatment of globoid cell leukodystrophy, also called Krabbe disease. Aisenberg et al. define the molecular signature of disease-associated macrophages (globoid cells) and demonstrate that brain-specific high-efficiency macrophage replacement in the twitcher model of Krabbe disease improves neuropathology, macrophage dysfunction, and survival.
