Call to fact-check columnists after another anti-MetroLink article from Colm McCarthy
A new article by economist Colm McCarthy against the planned 19km MetroLink from central Dublin to Swords has prompted a call for newspapers to fact-check their columnists. Councillor Feljin Jose, the Green Party's spokesperson on transport, made the call after McCarthy wrongly claimed in the Sunday Business Post today that "The only available evaluation of MetroLink’s costs and benefits was released as part of the TII’s preliminary assessment in 2022."

Thanks Cork's 96fm for reporting the consultant open now on 30km/h zones across the city. A government U-turn on default urban speed limits meant local government officials had to do a year-long analysis of every street. Now residents will have to lobby for excluded streets to be included. 🧵

If a small.child can't safely pedal along a cycle lane, it's not fit for purpose. They should ban those painted line ones; drivers assume the cyclist has their own lane and therefore doesn't need the 1.5m clearance.

UK Independent Bookshop Week starts today. Support your local indie! Our communities and culture are so much richer for their existence. And here’s a poem from ‘How to Lay an Egg with a Horse Inside’ in praise of indie bookshops - only available in the exclusive Indie Bookshop edition.
Reader/Traveller

Upstanding citizen, pillar of the community,
champion of all that is right and proper in this world,
denizen of the bibliosmia, scrutiniser of shelves,
peruser of tables, stroker of spines,
cool arbiter of good taste and sparkling judgement,
unseen comrade, poet-in-waiting –

as you hurtle through these pages,
it may interest you to know that no local economies
were harmed in your purchasing of this book.
Appropriate taxes have been paid. The commander
of the Starship Monetise has a few less pence
in his pocket for a new space rocket,

and meanwhile, in a galaxy not so far, far away –
in your own town or village, in fact –
the real hero of this story readies for lift-off.
Fuel levels, boosters and life support systems checked,
the door of the bookshop is opened
and in come the travellers in search of new worlds.A poster advertising Independent Bookshop Week.

Loyalty cards are a means for stores to carry out largescale data collection to track our habits and behaviours. The GDPR says that consent must be “freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous”. Is it consent when there is an imbalance of power, as in the case of supermarket loyalty schemes?

How many individuals are actually protesting today? It should be against the law to use vehicles to protest. Allowing their use gives those with access to trucks and tractors disportionate power to disrupt.

The car drivers GPS sent her down a rat-run to avoid traffic and this wasn't mentioned as a problem. Communities are damaged by car traffic but drivers are never asked to consider how theor behaviour affects others.

No one is saying that cyclists shouldn't wear helmets. The argument is that mandatory helmets decrease cycling and so have adverse public health effects. Not cycling is worse for your and your neighbours health than cycling without a helmet.

Last year, 185 people were killed on our roads in Ireland. Just shy of 70% of these were motorists or their passengers. In 2024, there were 77 recorded homicides. Half of these were victims of dangerous drivers. We should all take from this fiasco to turn the focus onto who is doing the killing.

A quick reminder of what #BigFebruary is about… Thanks to the magic of the cosmos, we start gaining daylight much faster in Feb than in Jan. Over 20 mins a week - setting us up for Spring. This chart is by @neilrkaye.bsky.social and is one of my all time favourites.
Chart by Neil Kaye showing the lengthening and shortening of daylight hours in southern Britain each week through the year. Each bar represents how much daylight is gained or lost each week.
The line is roughly a sine curve (head blown emoji), with the fastest daylight gains in Feb, March and April, and the fastest losses in Aug, Sep and October.
