When we let fossil fuel companies influence policy, we weave failure into governance. The science-policy-action interface is not so much a gap as it is a wilful roadblock, built on inertia, status quo bias, cognitive dissonance and above all, greed.

The 1.5°C target is dead and lost. Human health, wellbeing and life on earth is at extreme risk from the impacts of climate change. The cost of climate inaction will be paid in blood.

Irish Doctors for the Environment @irishdocsenv.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Our statement regarding the 1.5°C Paris Agreement failure, the Nepal-Tibet disaster, and climate justice. 🌍 The calls to action are ringing ever louder. Our governance, nationally and internationally, is failing. The cost of inaction is climbing exponentially. The time for drastic action is now.
Statement
Call to action: climate Justice and NEpal-tibet Glacier flood disaster
The UN has formally declared the 1.5°C target limit for global heating lost. We will exceed this limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, with unprecedented levels of destruction and loss of life as we approach tipping points and risk irreversible damage.
This is a deliberate failure of governance over the past eleven years, fuelled by inertia, cowardice and greed.
Last week, our hearts broke for the people of Tibet and Nepal, whose lives have been destroyed by the most extreme impacts of climate collapse.
We stand in solidarity with our fellow healthcare workers in this region, who are now dealing with the human cost of climate change.
Nepal is one of the lowest global contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, over 10,000 people have lost their lives to climate-related disasters in the past 30 years, with landslides and floods together accounting for almost 70 % of the total climate-related disaster mortality in Nepal (1).
The Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has now called for a global effort to tackle climate change. Just six weeks prior, Friends of the Earth Nepal issued the Nagarkot Call for Action on Climate Justice, warning of accelerating Himalayan ice loss - which went unheeded.
This is the epitome of climate injustice - the people who tread most lightly upon our Earth are the ones who pay the ultimate price.
Now, the UN has called again for urgent climate action to minimise the catastrophic impacts of rising temperatures, as previous action has been insufficient.
The calls to action and alarm bells are ringing louder than ever. The evidence linking rising temperatures, glacier loss and climate change to human activity and fossil fuel consumption is unequivocal. This poses a very real threat to life on this planet that cannot be overstated.

As healthcare professionals, we strive to do no harm. It is our responsibility to advocate for our patients when their health is at risk. We cannot protect our patients and our people if world leaders insist on embedding fossil fuels into our systems. These decisions are intentional, systemic and are grossly negligent of the common good.
Once again, we call for our leaders to act with integrity and take the urgent, bold climate action at the level that science - and justice - demands.

In Ireland, this means drastic action. Much like the Paris Agreement, we too have climate targets that our government has agreed to, but failed to act upon.
The EPA has stated we will only deliver half of the emission reductions agreed. Ireland has the second-highest GDP per capita in the EU, yet the second-highest greenhouse gas emissions. This is a blind, deliberate failure in national governance to commit to climate action in the interest of public wellbeing.
For us in Ireland, taking necessary climate action means reducing emissions from transport, livestock, energy, aviation and industry. While every individual has a part to play, the just transition requires big system change from government: updated and wholly implemented climate policies.
The climate crisis is an escalating public health emergency. We must answer the mounting calls to action with bravery. Science, justice, and the wellbeing of all life on this planet, depends on it.

Transport-related upper limb fractures accounted for about 5-6% of all cause fractures in 2023 and 2024. Lower limb fractures only about 3-4%. But Spinal fractures and Spinal cord injuries were higher - as high as 22% in 2023. Traumatic Brain injury 6%.
