Being read to and encouraged to read was one of the greatest gifts my parents ever gave me. My parents never put any barriers on their own library, bought us book lights so we could read in the car, and pretended they didn’t notice when I’d be up past bedtime reading under the sheets.

My kid has never had a problem with attendance, but one year he got 55% as he had tonsillitis so often. He was devastated and it sucked. Schools don't have much choice, though, it's what OFSTED expect.

There should be better methods, but the government hates the teaching unions so much, and half of them want to privatise education so desperately, that they aren't gonna help, and they certainly won't divert funds to social care to help 'the poors'.

There are cases where kids who never get praise at home want praise for something, so will nag their parents to get up and walk them to school so they can get a prize, but it's only the odd case that works for, and even then it feels exploitative.

Agree. It shouldn't be rewarded or punished, but lots of teachers agree too. There're genuinely parents who just can't be bothered to bring kids to school, but even then using kids to persuade them is wrong. Alas, there are government targets and social services don't have funding to intervene.

I can sympathise with that. I mean... who else would you make the villain of any modern day piece? Avoid making it Musk and it feels tone deaf and unrealistic. Make it Musk and it hits too close to home and Bond stopping it feels too easy.

Yeah, I mean that was the coolest thing about Mack's stories. Immature can be awesome when it's done well. The problem is that stories get harder and harder to tell the bigger you go, until it becomes impossible. Season 3 of Picard was better when it was Titan vs Changelings than Federation vs Borg.

In retrospect, that's kinda the best thing about them. They're like big budget season-end 2-parters. They're not Avengers Endgame, they're just Trek and that's fine. Much as I want to see Mack's Destiny Trilogy on screen, it's okay to have small stakes.
