I guessed "STBX" meant "Starbucks," but I was wrong! It's one of 5,900 new @dictionarycom words (it means "soon-to-be ex"). This week, I talk with lexicographer Steve Johnson about what made the cut, including "padawan," "throw hands," and more. 🎧 APPLE: buff.ly/GIpkmWX ▶️ YOUTUBE: buff.ly/RbBqBAA

We apologize to our phones and threaten our printers, so maybe it's no surprise that we call ships "she," but why do we do it even when they're named Hercules or Henry? We look at the theories in this week's show! APPLE: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w... SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/episode/3yo7...

In the background, a large white cruise ship sails on the ocean under a cloudy sunset sky. A bright pink ribbon bow is digitally superimposed near the upper right section of the ship. Overlaid across the center of the ship's hull is the word "'She'" in a large, white serif font. In the top right corner, the title "GRAMMAR GIRL" is displayed in a bold, stylized white and teal font.

Etymologically—among other ways—Dolly was a gift from God sesquiotic.com/2026/08/16/b...
Now, having talked about Barbie, we come around to dolls, or, more to the point, to Dolly. Classically, Dolly has been a pet name for Dorothy or, later, for Dolores; Dorothy comes from Dorothea, ‘gift from God’, the same roots as Theodore, while Dolores is from Spanish for ‘sorrows’, and became a woman’s name from María de los Dolores, Mary of the Sorrows – one of the presentations of the Virgin Mary. But the most famous Dolly of our times, Dolly Parton, was christened Dolly Rebecca Parton – not short for anything (rather like being named Jack or Cindy from birth: why not just go with the version everyone will use anyway?). And in that sense, Dolly is, well, like a doll.

And where does doll as in a stuffed or carved or moulded homunculus come from? Heh heh, from Dorothy. Yes, that’s right, a doll is a doll because a typical name was Doll, and dolls could have as easily been called molls or kates or barbies or any other common name for a girl.

Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com
NASHVILLE, TN (August 25, 2026) – Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Carl Thomas Dean (1942 – 2025), her mother Avie Lee Caroline Owens (1923 – 2003), and father, Robert Lee Parton, Sr. (1921 – 2000).

A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.

At Dolly’s request, a small, private service will be held for immediate family. Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging @DollyParton or by leaving a message at www.dollyparton.com.

Here's more: The Economist compared 1.2 million words of its own writers' writing to AI writing and found that only Claude (probably Sonnet 5) uses em dashes more than human writers now. www.economist.com/culture/2026... @junecasagrande.bsky.social @anamariecox.com
Then look at punctuation. Many believe LLMs stuff their prose with em-dashes, but that is not true after the most recent updates. Today only Claude uses more em-dashes than human writers, with ChatGPT using markedly fewer than any other writer in our study. Humans rejoice—and start using dashes again.

A better way to spot AI-generated writing would be to look for texts without much punctuation at all. LLMs are very Joycean about it: they use fewer commas and semicolons than humans (and hardly any parentheses). They use less punctuation in part because they write longer sentences—“and” is their most overused word—and in part because they do not quote experts.
