The glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) has a body that is almost completely transparent. They live water column instead of on the sea floor, so this helps them avoid being seen by predators. The only parts of its body that are opaque are its eyes, digestive tract and chromatophores #OCTOtober

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Just tax the compute. Datacentre? Cool. Fund your own power generation and water reservoirs, and then pay tax for every computational act your datacentre does. And we'll use the tax income to offset societal and job damage. Overnight, AI becomes something AI giants are desperate to restrict.

AI brings genuine benefits. Medical research, better understanding of complex systems. Useful. Keep that. Making 25% of us permanently unemployed and rendering pics of Fat Johnny Depp is not useful. It harms the planet and society. If it costs users money, it will stop. So tax the compute.

Of all the books we've been recommended for our #HumanistBookshelf, Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark has been recommended more than any other. It's easy to see why.
‘I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues... when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.’ Carl Sagan. Cosmologist, author, humanist.

One of the most influential voices of the American Revolution: Thomas Paine. Paine's incendiary critiques of tyranny, organised religion, slavery, and extreme inequality, have kept his work on humanist bookshelves for over two centuries. #HumanistBookshelf
‘Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.’

A report titled "Weekly update - acute respiratory infection activity in Tasmania" published Friday 18 September 2026, with data current to Sunday 13 September 2026.
An upper table lists the general condition "Acute Respiratory Illness" as having "Moderate" current activity.
A lower table breaks down current activity levels by specific Pathogen:
•	COVID-19: Low
•	Influenza: Moderate
•	RSV: Moderate
Explanatory bullet points note that influenza activity is increasing, particularly among those aged 65 and older. Meanwhile, RSV activity continues to decline following a mid-season peak in early August. The next update is scheduled for Friday 2 October 2026.
Section "1.2 Sentinel laboratory surveillance" from a Tasmanian health report, featuring "Table 3. PCR testing for respiratory pathogens, DSPL and RHH Pathology, Tasmania, week ending 13-Sep-26".
The data table contains rows for 10 pathogens, tracking "Number of Tests", "Number of Positive Tests", and "Percent Positive". Key metrics include:
•	Influenza A: 1,412 tests, 203 positive (14.4% positive).
•	Rhinovirus: 1,103 tests, 189 positive (17.1% positive).
•	Metapneumovirus: 1,362 tests, 82 positive (6.0% positive).
•	Parainfluenza: 1,362 tests, 75 positive (5.5% positive).
•	RSV: 1,412 tests, 70 positive (5.0% positive).
•	SARS-CoV-2: 1,412 tests, 14 positive (1.0% positive).
Section "1.5 COVID-19 whole genome sequencing" from a Tasmanian epidemiological report. Three text paragraphs outline that SARS-CoV-2 genomic testing reflects the continuous evolution of Omicron-derived lineages, showing substantial changes over the 12 months leading up to 16 August 2026.
The final paragraph details specific lineage breakdowns for the four weeks leading to 16 August 2026:
•	Sub-lineage was identified for 17% (33 of 202) of confirmed cases.
•	NB.1.8.1 related sub-lineages made up the largest proportion at 45% (15 of 33).
•	BA.3.2 related sub-lineages accounted for 42% (14 of 33).
"Figure 14. Temporal trends in SARS-CoV-2 reporting groups identified through genomic surveillance in Tasmania, last 12 months to 16-Aug-26."
Features two stacked bar charts tracking variants by "Date of collection" from Sept 2025 to Aug 2026. A colour-coded legend lists variants: BA.3.2, JN.1, KP.3.1.1, LP.8.1, NB.1.8.1, Recombinant, XEC, and XFG.
•	Top Chart (Count): Shows total sample counts fluctuating over time, peaking at 20 cases in late 2025 and dropping significantly with gaps in July 2026.
•	Bottom Chart (Proportion): Displays relative proportions scaling up to 1.00. Darker purple variants (like XEC and XFG) dominate late 2025, transitioning heavily to lighter purple and blue tones (like NB.1.8.1 and BA.3.2) by mid-to-late 2026.
