yeah it pretty explicitly accused people of lying (and about those telling the truth: “if you care to live in a silo, rent is free.”) meanwhile the article you linked above carefully unpacked how many recent chart monsters were also huge cultural phenomena and still reached non-pop-radio-listeners

With incessant news coverage alongside chart and playlist presence, it’s pretty difficult to still claim total ignorance on this one. Perhaps there is a deeper reason why people say they haven’t heard the song and feel the need to make it known: cultural cachet.

The players shouldn't have to be in the kind of position that necessitates them making a request like this and a coach lying to them about the player whose life he helped end should mean a whole lot more than what they've had to be brave enough to ask.

FTR, as a reporter the story reads like the writers are trying to give their murdered colleague's side of things as much as they feel they can. I'm sure it was an incredibly hard story to write and their sympathies are likely with their colleague, but it is NYT and there are conventions to uphold.

As a survivor reading between the lines of this very carefully written story it sounds like Jonathan McKinsey was a trans man in an abusive and controlling marriage who was targeted for violence repeatedly by his ex-wife and her parents and eventually murdered. But as a reporter? I can't be sure.
