1/ Restoring Yandex's damaged data centres will take at least six months and cost billions. Disruption is already severe; Russian manufacturers and distributors face imminent disaster due to Ukraine's strikes causing the collapse of the state-operated goods tracking system. ⬇️

Let's explore the IceCube Neutrino Observatory! Constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, it embeds ~5,800 ultra-sensitive light detectors (DOMs) in 90 strings through 1 cubic km of ultra-clear glacier ice sitting at very nearly the precise geographic South Pole.

That is consistent. EU's steel protectionism hammers local steel users, whose demand for steel declines. So EU steel makers desperately need new source of steel demand that can withstand the higher prices that prevail under protectionism.

"charities controlled by wealthy people—with Treasury Dept. approval—can put individual stocks into the accounts of thousands or millions of children." This could create a sympathetic constituency that motivates politicians/regulators to change rules for the benefit of a company's current owners. ☠️

IKEA names its sofas after Swedish places, and most of its armchairs follow the same rule. IKEA Sweden sells 64 of them right now, and I put every one on a map. Pick a sofa or armchair and see where it comes from! karaman.is/ikea-place-n... #dataviz #maps
A web page titled "The IKEA place-name map". On the left, a dropdown has MALMKÖPING selected. Below it is a photo of a beige 3-seat sofa priced from 7 295 kr, and it is placed in Flens kommun, Södermanlands län. On the right is a map of Sweden with dots for sofas, armchairs and places that have both. Most dots are in the south, and Älmhult, IKEA's home town, is marked with a red cross.

Mass deportations are getting increasingly personal for a lot of candidates and elected officials. Here, Paul LePage, former GOP governor of Maine and current congressional candidate, says his son's father-in-law is currently being targeted for deportation.
Paul LePage said Monday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is deporting a relative.

The Republican former governor who is running for Maine’s open 2nd Congressional District seat made the revelation in response to a question from a Portland Press Herald reporter during an event in Augusta, where LePage accepted an endorsement from Maine’s Fraternal Order of Police.

LePage told the reporter that his son’s father-in-law, who has a valid work permit, faces deportation because “certain people in Washington” don’t like the country he’s from, according to the Press Herald.

LePage didn’t identify the relative or say which country he is from.

He went on to say that ICE should focus its deportation efforts on gangsters and criminals.

“Would I go after everybody that’s here, that have work permits and have been here for decades? Probably not,” the Press Herald quoted LePage as saying.

At the same event, LePage also criticized the new state law limiting police cooperation with ICE agents.

It's a basic thing that no one even bothers to talk about anymore. But he's simply never understood what trade deficits are. Never. When you are getting net investment into your country, you have a trade deficit. But that's good! Trade deficits and surpluses are not inherently good or bad.
