"Vaccines work" isn't a political statement. "Immigrants do not increase crime" isn't a political statement. "Climate change is real" isn't a political statement. "Genocide is bad" isn't a political statement. Stop neutralizing the power of facts by framing them as "politics." Reality matters.

THE LOVED ONES

Our free daily newsletter delivers context, not clutter. Sign up.
The loved ones we call the dead depart from us and for a while are absent. And then as if called back by our love, they come near us again. They enter our dreams.
We feel they have been near us when we have not thought of them.
They are simply here, simply waiting while we are distracted among our obligations. At last it comes to us: They live now in the permanent world.
We are the absent ones.

Dolly Partons IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Dear Imagination Library Graduate,

My, how time flies. It seems it was only yesterday when your family and friends read you your first story. You were just a baby. Now you're five years old and about to go to school. How exciting!
This may be your last book from my Imagination Library but you have to promise me you will keep on reading. If you go to your local public library you will find a great number of books just for kids your age. Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.
I hope you have a great time in school. I bet your school will even have a library where you can check out books. You and all of your friends are very special. There is no limit to what you can do or how far you can go.

Just remember the lessons my family taught me - dream big dreams; learn everything you can learn; and care for all those who care for you. You do all of these things and you can be anyone you want to be.

You are terrific, and remember...
I Will Always Love You,
Dolly

Climate is a pattern, and the pattern has changed. = Climate Change
Graphic reading, “The difference between ‘There used to be hot summers too.’ and climate crisis.” Below is a temperature-anomaly chart showing mostly blue, cooler-than-average years in the earlier record, shifting dramatically toward sustained red, warmer-than-average years in recent decades. Occasional earlier red bars are labelled “These were hot summers,” while the sustained cluster of increasingly warm recent years is labelled “This is climate change.”

They've been conducting mass deportations for almost 2 years. Did that make finding a job easier? Did your rent go down?

They overturned Roe V Wade. Did that give women paid maternity leave?

They have defunded public schools and teachers. Has that improved your child's education?

They have attacked trans people for years. Did that make them charge the men in the Epstein files?

They started a new forever war. Did that make your gas prices go down?

They dismantled the federal government. Did that make your food safer or your groceries cheaper?

Republicans are in charge of the Presidency, Congress, Senate, and Scotus. Is your life better now?

Deep reading, careful listening, and constructive conversing are harder to do than they used to be. And that is not because of some individual, professional, or generational failure. These things have been made harder to do by structural adjustments to our systems of media, politics, and economy on behalf of consolidated power. These adjustments are being defended and reinforced, but are not inevitable or permanent.

Always read @piperformissouri.bsky.social:
McLuhan was right. The liberal world by definition is literate.

And if literacy is the foundation of liberal democracy and of empathy through shared stories and of citizens who can think critically about power, than we have to defend books and literacy. We can’t be at the end of reading. Every book we read and every story we share and every library we defend is an act of resistance.
