I squirm a little at saying something is "Christian" or "non-Christian," but I think denominational boundaries and authorities are useful. Christianity may not be well-defined, but (some) denominations.

I haven't advertised this in a while so: I also run a blog about Japanese bubble era (1980s to early 90s) aesthetics. If you enjoy retro Japanese style, consumerism, and pop culture (which presumably you do if you follow this account), check out BUBBLISM here: bubblism.jp

We read the Catwings books with my four-year-old and he liked them a lot. He barely recognizes letters, but he likes stories a lot

I feel like that about books. It's generally hard to make time to read, so I've very out of the loop. When I do get a chance, though, I have no idea how to find a novel that I think I might like. I just go back to the authors I already knew 10 years ago and see if they have something new

My mom was a high school teacher, and thinking back, I remember watching TV together with her grading papers on the couch. Didn't realize how much work it was until I became a parent and trying to keep my own plates spinning.

When you identify that group at the top as "them," then there is the possiblity of having a very large, united "us."

"and everyone is out to fuck everyone else creates fertile ground for conservatism & eventually authoritarianism." I think that's right. But leftists say (or should be saying) that it's not "everyone else." It's a few specific people, the rich and the powerful, "the 1%."

I love my ebike. We have a big hill by our house that makes riding a standard bike *really* difficult. On my ebike, though, no sweat. It's fun! Gas is expensive. Buying a car, even used, is expensive. Ebike, though? Not bad! I think that is pushing a lot of people to give them a try

Also, hey, if you want to nudge the needle on any of these issues, it's neat to skip the "convince the church that everyone deserves human rights and compassion" step, and go right to the "do something" step. I didn't realize how big of a burden this had become until I changed denominations.

This is *so* true! Your time and money can help keep a more affirming church alive, while not funding or validating harmful church. And there's still plenty of hearts and minds to be swayed in even the more affirming churchs, if that's what you feel called to do.

I don't really want to compare that to WWII. But, I do think growing up in a society that was almost entirely, unflinchingly pro-war has meant that the whole generation has had to unpack a lot of ideas just to get to a mindset of "war is probably bad, actually."

Manufacturing Consent was written in the 80s, and identified one of the "filters" for how USA culture is shaped as anti-communism. After 9/11 Chomsky says this shifted to anti-terrorism. Both were vague ideas that could easily be attached to America's enemies to justify hostility.

9/11 "united" us. The status quo was jingoism, and it was overwhelming. Only 1 member of Congress voted against authorizing military force against Afghanistan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authori... Today we're "polarized." Back then, practically everyone was pro-war. There was no meaningful resistance.

"To the debtors of his time, on the other hand, Christ’s advice was singularly and unspectacularly pragmatic: to try to settle suits out of court ... before a judge can remand one to the court’s officers for incarceration. Do not refuse the plaintiff his plaint; in fact, give him more than he asks."
