An excellent and informative thread 🧵
A still from Thor: Ragnarok. Hella (goth Cate Blanchet) has casually caught Thor's hammer out of the air before it could hit her. The hammer is labeled "It's basic biology." Hella is labeled "Advanced Biology." Hella is smiling. Nice try.

Please tell your kids, every damn day if necessary, that chatGPT is not a goddamn search engine and you shouldn’t believe a word it says. Tell the adults too, but it’s especially imperative to inoculate kids against this

Block 2/64 was a struggle. I think I sewed the order incorrectly, and I definitely underestimated some seams. Overall, I am not thrilled with the product. But I learned: 1) It's okay to unpick (I kept telling myself that an unpicker is just like an eraser).

Block 1/64: my very first quilted block. I was gifted the fabric and covers of The Art of Quilting, and so I have a project to learn with. It doesn't need to be perfect, or even good, it just needs to exist.
A 4 x 4 quilt block, featuring bright pink, patterned lime green and a light blue with dotted white contrast.

"92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI" www.techtonicjustice.org/reports/ines... this is a damning report
reads: The Ways AI Decides How Low-Income People Work, Live, Learn, and Survive

The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, by governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful private interests restricts the opportunities of low-income people in every basic aspect of life: at home, at work, in school, at government offices, and within families. AI technologies derive from a lineage of automation and algorithms that have been in use for decades with established patterns of harm to low-income communities. As such, now is a critical moment to take stock and correct course before AI of any level of technical sophistication becomes entrenched as a legitimate way to make key decisions about the people society marginalizes.

Employing a broad definition of AI, this report represents the first known effort to comprehensively explain and quantify the reach of AI-based decision-making among low-income people in the United States. It establishes that essentially all 92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI.

11) The next few months are going to bring unimaginable pain to so many. I did my breakdown earlier this week because I confronted the fact that I might be separated from my kids like my husband was. Grieve. But remember we are legion. Be uncompromisingly hopeful because fascists feed on nihilism.

4) Learn to live with social complexity. If you write off the possibility of persuading your fellow citizens, fascists win by default. In practice fascist ideologues are few, but people think they can ride that tiger for their own purpose. Read Sarah Ahmed’s organization of hate. Weaponize love.

Today I have rocked my job, I have helped kids master word-attack skills and helped a 7th grader grasp the base 10 number system. She paid me a huge compliment: "You make maths seem simple ma'am". Of course, I reminded her that maths truly is simple if you take it step by step.

Bitcoin consumes about 2.5% of US electricity, about the same as all residential cooling. An article decrying *that* electricity usage as a personal moral failing would be much less tone deaf.

Darlings, a moment. You are *not* hard to love. If someone made you feel that way, that is 100% about THEM and their own bullshit. Loving people is easy. None of us are perfect. We're all quirky, with flaws and baggage. But love doesn't give a damn about that minutiae.

Petition to bring back the term "Cybercrud" for what's happening right now with "AI" (from "Computer Lib", 1974)
Cybercrud takes numerous forms. All of them, however, share the patina of "science" that computers have for the layman.
1a) COMPUTER AS MAGIC WORD
The most delicate, and seemingly innocent, technique is the practice of naming things so as spuriously to suggest that they involve computers.
Thus there is a manufacturer of pot-pipes with
"Data" in its name, and apparently a pornography house with a "Cyber-",
1b) COMPUTER AS MAGIC INGREDIENT
The above seems silly, but it is no less silly than talking about "computer predictions" and
"computer studies" of things. The mere fact that a computer is involved in something has no bearing on its character or validity. The way things are done with computers affects their character and validity, just like the way things are done without computers. (Indeed, merely using a computer often has no bearing on the way things are done.)

Carlin's daughter
My statement regarding the AI generated George Carlin special: My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain and imagination. No machine will ever replace his genius. These AI generated products are clever attempts at trying to recreate a mind that will never exist again. Let’s let the artist’s work speak for itself. Humans are so afraid of the void that we can’t let what has fallen into it stay there.
Here’s an idea, how about we give some actual living human comedians a listen to? But if you want to listen to the genuine George Carlin, he has 14 specials that you can find anywhere.
