An excellent and informative thread 🧵
A still from Thor: Ragnarok. Hella (goth Cate Blanchet) has casually caught Thor's hammer out of the air before it could hit her. The hammer is labeled "It's basic biology." Hella is labeled "Advanced Biology." Hella is smiling. Nice try.

Please tell your kids, every damn day if necessary, that chatGPT is not a goddamn search engine and you shouldn’t believe a word it says. Tell the adults too, but it’s especially imperative to inoculate kids against this

My apologies for the lack of alt text on the image: A wonky quilt square, the pattern is called Whirlwind Square consisting of 2 sets of alternating green and pink quadrilaterals, set against white triangles.

2) A pattern will definitely help. 3) It's okay to sew on the blocks. 4) Geometry is surprisingly useful when evaluating triangles. 5) I can have a PTSD episode and quilt before and after it. This will be an adventure.

Block 2/64 was a struggle. I think I sewed the order incorrectly, and I definitely underestimated some seams. Overall, I am not thrilled with the product. But I learned: 1) It's okay to unpick (I kept telling myself that an unpicker is just like an eraser).

Block 1/64: my very first quilted block. I was gifted the fabric and covers of The Art of Quilting, and so I have a project to learn with. It doesn't need to be perfect, or even good, it just needs to exist.
A 4 x 4 quilt block, featuring bright pink, patterned lime green and a light blue with dotted white contrast.

"92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI" www.techtonicjustice.org/reports/ines... this is a damning report
reads: The Ways AI Decides How Low-Income People Work, Live, Learn, and Survive

The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, by governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful private interests restricts the opportunities of low-income people in every basic aspect of life: at home, at work, in school, at government offices, and within families. AI technologies derive from a lineage of automation and algorithms that have been in use for decades with established patterns of harm to low-income communities. As such, now is a critical moment to take stock and correct course before AI of any level of technical sophistication becomes entrenched as a legitimate way to make key decisions about the people society marginalizes.

Employing a broad definition of AI, this report represents the first known effort to comprehensively explain and quantify the reach of AI-based decision-making among low-income people in the United States. It establishes that essentially all 92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI.

11) The next few months are going to bring unimaginable pain to so many. I did my breakdown earlier this week because I confronted the fact that I might be separated from my kids like my husband was. Grieve. But remember we are legion. Be uncompromisingly hopeful because fascists feed on nihilism.

4) Learn to live with social complexity. If you write off the possibility of persuading your fellow citizens, fascists win by default. In practice fascist ideologues are few, but people think they can ride that tiger for their own purpose. Read Sarah Ahmed’s organization of hate. Weaponize love.

Today I have rocked my job, I have helped kids master word-attack skills and helped a 7th grader grasp the base 10 number system. She paid me a huge compliment: "You make maths seem simple ma'am". Of course, I reminded her that maths truly is simple if you take it step by step.

Darlings, a moment. You are *not* hard to love. If someone made you feel that way, that is 100% about THEM and their own bullshit. Loving people is easy. None of us are perfect. We're all quirky, with flaws and baggage. But love doesn't give a damn about that minutiae.

is sies (which has a similar pronounciation to cis) and has a meaning similar to eww, gross. So I think part of it in South Africa is associated with not being the default and a sound association. 3/3

When I have managed to convey that the cis- prefix comes from well established science in other terms there is less resistance. I also suspect that it might have to do with the homophonic analogue of sissy (as in not masculine); and in South Africa, an Afrikaans word expressing disgust 2/n

As a cisgender woman I have no problem with it. People who I have spoken with about it when they have made comments, seem to object because they feel like they don't need a label. That the default doesn't need definition and seem to object to "new-fangled" and "non-scientific" terms. 1/n
