Apparently, my hometown is under water but thanks to the state of corporate journalism, the "local" newspaper is totally behind a paywall and coverage from the nearest large market is spotty at best. So it's all citizen reporters on social media platforms that I'm not on.

I serendipitously ended up reading back to back two novels about aging gay men in mid-century Los Angeles. "Father of Frankenstein" by Christopher Bram and "A Single Man" by Christopher Isherwood. Both excellent and good companions to read together.

My very thoughtful husband, @eldertwizard.bsky.social, bought me a collector's edition of The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington after I saw it in a bookstore and regretted not getting it. Though it was published in 1918, it feels contemporary. A favorite passage in the comments.

Yeah my job is pretty cool. My uniform is a tactical vest that’s two sizes too small and a gaiter I bought in a gas station. They send me to sneak into schools to kidnap little kids because people got mad about having to press 1 for English. The president had to warn everyone to stop spitting on me.
