I loved Ramona Fradon, who would have been 100 today, and the horror shorts she drew for House of Mystery, House of Secrets, et al. So when I got a commission, I asked for Cain and Abel. She returned not just a character drawing but this delightful one-panel gag that captures their relationship.
Cain cuts the rope on Abel’s boat from the dock, setting him adrift

The “what’s going to happen?!?!” hype press about this Avengers movie is weird considering it’s clearly based on a specific story and we more or less know what’s going to happen, and what the cliffhanger will be. So much clickbait and PR depends on pretending the source material doesn’t exist.

“Yes, Robin, I’ll live. But once I’m discharged from this ICU and get the tubes out of my chest, the recovery could take months to years. I may have permanent chronic nerve pain. Then there’s the anxiety, nightmares, hyper vigilance, and depression from the PTSD. So, chum, how’s Alfred?”
Robin visits Batman in the hospital. The Caped Crusader, in bed with his chest bandaged, says he’ll live and that Black Dan’s bullets missed his heart.

Six weeks out I’ve started to see a handful of “what if everything we think we’re seeing is wrong and the Republicans don’t have a catastrophic election?” takes. Next up are the “Democrats would be better off losing,” and “the GOP getting crushed proves we’re a center right nation”

Based on my reaction (laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe, collapsing to the floor, needing to stop the show and take 10 minutes to recover) it’s the “Two beers…hot or cold?“ scene from the Detroiters pilot, specifically when they cut to the old guy blowing the steam off his beer.

Whenever you get worked up about spoilers, remember that the novelization of Star Wars was released six and a half months before the movie.

It’s as important to regard Star Wars in the context of New Hollywood as is to the blockbuster era it led to. Put aside what followed and think of it as Lucas’ follow-up to American Graffiti, and alongside what Scorsese, Coppola, et al were doing. Imagine if it hadn’t created an empire.

Happy 114th to the legendary Chuck Jones. And it’s now been 42 years with this most prized possession, which I got in middle school after writing to him after seeing him speak at Dartmouth College.

My first Batman comics from when I was three. It was a real letdown to discover this Aparo guy didn’t draw every Batman story. I was a precocious reader, in large part because it was urgent that I understood what was happening here.
Brave and the Bold #118, with the Joker forcing Batman and Wildcat to box to the death; and Detective Comics #446, with Batman linking in a warehouse as a Batman statue drops to the floor, shattering to reveal a skeleton inside

As much as I love a lot of his work, mopey “what if Nick Drake was boring and mumbly” Sea Change/Morning Phase/Ride Lonesome Beck is very much not for me. His melancholy needs a contrast. Humor, hip hop production, lo-fi production, something.

If I were a supervillain defeated by my own polished ceiling I think I would be so humiliated I would give up on the spot, acknowledging I’d be better off in a cell. From the Starman strip by Jack Burnley in Adventure #77.
