"The Library" by American illustrator Elizabeth Shippen Green (1871-1954), who shared a communal household in Pennsylvania with fellow artists Violet Oakley and Jessie Willcox Smith. See Alice A. Carter's book The Red Rose Girls for more information on these remarkable women. #SomethingBeautiful
Painting: "The Library" by Elizabeth Shippen Green. The image shows a red-haired woman in a long, loose, golden dress sitting in a wicker chair. She has a large illustrated book in her lap. Other volumes are strewn around her and fill the bookcases behind her. The artist studied under Howard Pyle, and then forged a successful career illustrating magazines and children's books. The fourth member of the Red Rose household was Henrietta Cozens, whose management of the house allowed the others to focus on art. (I wish I had a Henrietta in my own life.)

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern. #upcycling

No matter "how often you think about the Roman Empire", identifying a #RomanSalute is even more awkward, considering there's no ancient source clearly describing it. There's *one* ambigous depiction of an outstretched arm on Trajan's column, there's *one* vague passage in Josephus. That's it. 🤷‍♂️
Photo of a detail of Trajan's Column in Rome, showing the "Welcoming sacrifice in Trajan’s honour" and depicting one man, surrounded by many other, with an outstretched right arm, showing the palm of the right hand to the viewer.

Something a bit different from me - I hope you don’t mind. I’m having a few days away from the Peak District in southern Italy, and on Sunday I fulfilled a long-held dream to see Pompeii. It was as fascinating as I expected, and also I met possibly the most smug cat in the world.
A very smug cat in the ruins of Pompeii. The cat is white and tabby, sitting with his tail curled around him, one ear up and one ear down, eyes shut. He sits on a marble plinth with Roman text on it, framed by an arch behind him, glowing in the late afternoon sun.
