Stretching the meaning of the words 'summer cabin'.
Standing on the edge of a wooden deck. In front, a grassy, green patch. Further away, a foamy sea descending on a small beach. A snow-capped mountain disappears into thick, white clouds. Everything looks fabulously foggy, wet, and cold.

Today is Head Day (Höfuðdagur) in Iceland, named after the beheading of John the Baptist, but that's not why this day is important. It's because Head Day used to be THE weather day in Icelandic folklore. 🧵

My daughter just got this paper embroidery thing and now my son is outraged that I haven't been able to find Marvel version. "How can there be no Marvel embroidery, mum? How?"

Me, looking for something to watch: "It's been two decades since I saw GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. Wonder if I should revisit?" Me, an hour into the film: 😭 Me, an hour after the film: 😭 Me, trying to fall asleep: 😭 Worst decision this year, guys.

The road goes ever on and on and sometimes it disappears for a bit.
A rubble of dusty, brown rocks seems to magically turn into a vaguely roadlike path, also dusty brown. The sky is blue.

Ships coming into harbour and getting their crown of flags tells you that Fishermen's Day is soon upon us. By law, all ships must be berthed before midnight on Saturday, and they are not allowed to sail again until after 12 on Monday.
Looking down a street that ends in a view of a large, blue trawler. Look closely and you'll see a line of flags leading from the bow, up into the mast and back towards the stern.

It is 7°C, nothing is green yet, there's a bit of snow in the mountains and it'll probably rain for the next 40 days. But the summer cabin is habitable again and it's still bright out at 23:00 so I don't care, I'm declaring summer.
A glass of beer on a wooden deck. Behind it is a mountain, an ocean and in the distance, islands. There is much brown and very little green.

The big news on this fine voting day in Iceland. Let's all hope that people will start behaving themselves as the night wears on.
Screenshot from the Icelandic news, automatically translated into English:

The police in the capital area were called out today regarding a person eating an apple on a bus.

A police statement said that according to the bus driver, passengers are absolutely not allowed to eat apples on the bus. The case was handled by the police.

The police also received a report of a doorbell ringing in District 109. The individual was spoken to and told to stop bothering people.

Police also note that no reports have been received regarding polling stations in the capital area today.

My brother used to eat little corners off book pages. In the small library of the small town we lived in, I'd sometimes get a book with a few missing top corners, and I'd know he'd read it at some point. I wonder if any of them are still there and if people have puzzled over this.

The Iceland Space Agency has a strangely busy logo. It fascinates me.
Circular logo with black and red border, on which is written "Iceland Space Agency", and "Frá Íslandi upp í himingeim". In the middle of the logo, there is a circular Icelandic flag on top of a white outline of Iceland, on top of a starry sky. Above the country you can see the edge of the moon, below it, the edge of a reddish-brown planet that is Mars. We know this because also on the outer circle, it says "Moon" and "Mars", though not in the same place as where the planets are placed in the inner circle.

Tomorrow, 6 January, is the last day of Christmas in Iceland, simply called the Thirteenth. It's a good one because there is a lot of folklore attached to it (some of it is also said to apply to New Year's Day and/or Christmas Day). A little 🧵

Currently obsessed with a little creature called a 'sea angel' after interviewing the diver (Erlendur Bogason) who took this photo. The sea angel is only a few cm long and looks absurdly cute while swimming with its tiny 'wings'.
A translucent, blue creature with a yellow core, red tail, little wings, and what almost looks like little horns. Looks vaguely humanoid, but with no legs. Background is dark and it looks like it's snowing (which is not the case, since it's underwater).

This is an Icelandic Advent calendar from 1950. Because nothing says Christmas like a hedgehog made out of a potato and matchsticks that you pull out every day until the holidays.
A black-and-white newspaper cutting with an image of a creepy creature that could be a hedgehog or a possessed sheep.

Above the image is the Icelandic word for advent calendar, 'jóladagatal'. Below, in old-fashioned Icelandic, it says, translated:

Here is a fun adventure calendar made from a potato, two thumbtacks, four sticks for legs, and as many matchsticks as there are days until Christmas. Let the children remove one of the hedgehog's spines each day.

I'm named after the flower wild pansy/heartsease, but in Icelandic we just call it a violet. This name comes with the curse of constantly being gifted violet-flavoured everything and the burden of convincing guests to eat/drink it.
