One of my favourite heather views in the #peakdistrict, especially at sunset, when the light floods over the moors and makes every flower glow. Standing amid the huge boulders on the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark, you can look towards Over Owler Tor and lose yourself in a stunning sea of colour.
A wide heather landscape, with sweeping moorland covered in purple flowers. In the foreground are large boulders with heather growing amongst them, and in the far distance are hills beneath a sunset sky.

I love watching inversions roll across the Peak District hills. The mist hangs in every dip, sliding along the ridges like waves reaching into the hollows on a beach. It's mesmerising to watch it clear and regroup in a constant cycle, until the sun makes it disappear in a final magic trick.
A view across distant hills, with mist laying in the valleys and blue sky above. In the foreground is gritstone rock, and the hills are green with summer trees.

Walking on twisty paths through waving grasses, shining gold in the last light of the evening sun, leading away into the distant hills. These are the tiny moments in life that bring the hugest pleasure, for those who stop to look, to watch, to notice. 📍 Peak District, England

If you stand very still right now, you can feel it. A slow awakening, reaching, uncurling, every tiny thing flickering back to life. The birds are singing a little louder, and the light from longer days stretches into all the shadows. Everything lies just ahead of us, around the next corner.
A curving lane with grass growing in the middle, stretching away under trees and between hedges. The sun is rising through the trees directly ahead, lighting the lane.

Winter mornings can shine with such quiet colours, the light muted, a whisper rather than a shout. As I stood here the only noises came from the sleepy ducks and the ripples on the water, and the first rays of sun turned the frozen birch trees to rose gold before my eyes.
A canal with ducks and a boathouse in the distance, frosty grasses along the edges and trees all around. Everything shines with a sunrise glow that’s pink and frosty.

Something a bit different from me - I hope you don’t mind. I’m having a few days away from the Peak District in southern Italy, and on Sunday I fulfilled a long-held dream to see Pompeii. It was as fascinating as I expected, and also I met possibly the most smug cat in the world.
A very smug cat in the ruins of Pompeii. The cat is white and tabby, sitting with his tail curled around him, one ear up and one ear down, eyes shut. He sits on a marble plinth with Roman text on it, framed by an arch behind him, glowing in the late afternoon sun.

I don’t think I’ve ever loved my village more than I did yesterday. The hills sparkled with bright snow, the mists curled lazily below, and the church stood half-hidden in trees crafted from diamonds. I could have stayed all day in this spot, listening to the bell ringing out through the valley.
An old wooden gate lies off its hinges in the foreground, resting on part of an old stone wall, brushed with snow. Beyond, a snow covered landscape of icy trees, with only a church spire rising above. A layer of mist hangs over the hills above the trees, and the tops of the hills are just visible above the mist, with a blue sky.

Now, more than ever, we need the comfort of quiet places. I stood here and listened to the silence, marvelling at the perfect white that nestled in every swoop of the land. Sometimes it feels as if the world is going quite mad, and it helps to remember how reassuringly brief and small we all are.
A wooden gate opening to a snow-covered landscape of fields, stone walls and a single farm, leading to distant hills. The sun has just set and the sky is full of pinks, purple and peach hues.

The #peakdistrict village of Hathersage yesterday, as the snow fell softly and the lights twinkled. Only a few hardy souls were out, and me in my wellies. Hathersage has strong associations with Charlotte Bronte, and The George Inn (pictured here) is featured in her classic novel ‘Jane Eyre’.
A snowy lane through a village, with tyre marks in the snow leading away uphill. On the right is a village pub, lit up with orange lights glowing.

Only 1 day to Christmas in my mini advent calendar, and I had to end on a gate! Standing here felt like peeping into a fairytale. I got very snowy, but every branch glittered, every tree shone, and I hardly dared breathe for fear of breaking the spell. Happy Christmas Eve!
A snowy wood, with trees and undergrowth covered in falling snow and snowflakes visible in the air. A small gate leads into the wood.

2 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar without fiddly doors, and I’m on this little Peak District lane, a quiet escape from the rush and bustle of life. The magnificent beeches form an honour guard to welcome you in as you return, and I always breathe a sigh of relief when I see them.
A snowy lane disappearing into the distance. To the left are small beech saplings with orange leaves and to the right is an old stone wall. Behind the stone wall stand a row of very tall, very straight old beech trees, evenly spaced, the sunlight catching in their trunks and branches.

Only 3 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar! A different view of Mam Tor, looking up from the Vale of Edale, snow dusting every rocky ridge. I love the swooping curves of the fences, and I’m indebted to the person who stood at the summit as I took the shot, giving a sense of scale.
A snowy view of Mam Tor in Derbyshire, looking up from the Vale of Edale. There are fences zig-zagging up through the photo to the top, and above rises the summit of Mam Tor, with snow dusting its ridges. Right at the very top stands a lone figure.

4 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar, and we’re standing in the complete peace of this woodland, the snow and fog damping every sound save for a slight creaking of branch against branch, and the softest patter of flakes as they land on the soft ground all around us.
A misty, snowy pine woodland, with tall trees ahead, creating an entrance way between them into the fog. Snow lies on the ground and is covering the branches of the trees.

5 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar! Stripped of their leaves in winter, trees reveal their true shape and form. In summer you barely notice these trees on the hillside but in winter they're a family of three, branches touching, beautiful and intricate in the falling snow. #peakdistrict
Three trees stand together on a snowy hillside, nothing else visible.

6 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar, on a narrow lane in the #peakdistrict, leading through the fields and trees, over the streams and hills. It was shining after a fresh fall of snow, the little cottages cosy in the valley with the bulk of the moor watching over them protectively.
A countryside scene in the snow, with a narrow lane running across the bottom of the frame, a cluster of cottages the only colour amongst the white. The trees are coated with snow, and beyond the cottages lies the bulk of the hills, just discernible in the white, watching over all.

7 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar, sharing my own favourite festive #peakdistrict shots. As I passed this dark pine wood, my eye was caught by a spotlight of sun pouring through the trees. It lit up a beech sapling, turning it into a flame of colour and light in the gloom.
A dark pine woodland with straight trunks lined with snow. In the centre is a single shaft of sunlight that is lighting up a beech tree, still bearing its orange leaves.

8 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar! I came upon this woolly gang on Longstone Moor enjoying the pink morning sky and the promise of warmth it might bring. Their bodies left little patches of snow-melt in the field as they stood up one by one to watch the sun rise together. #peakdistrict
A photograph of six sheep in the snow at sunrise, the sky pink with dawn, which is reflecting on the snow in their field.

9 days to Christmas in my mini advent calendar and today’s shot is from Flash, the highest village in England. This remains one of my favourites because it's so very English; the snow falling softly over the churchyard and covering the wonky postbox on a stick beside the old stone wall.
An old postbox in the snow with a church behind and a tree arching over, with snow falling softly.

With only 10 days to Christmas (🫣) I thought I'd share a #peakdistrict mini advent calendar with a festive photo countdown?! This is the village of Litton, looking like the heart of a snow globe. No other people, no cars, just a quiet fall of snow on the village green, and me with my camera.
A snowy village scene, with an old red telephone box on the right, leaning slightly and covered with snow. To the left is an empty bench. Beyond, pretty village cottages with snowy rooftops.

Sometimes it doesn't matter where the road leads. All that matters is the first glimpse of daybreak rushing up the valley and trickling along the verges to light up the hedgerows. Sometimes all that matters is the spring in your step as you walk up the hill to meet the morning.
A track leads into the image with grass verges and winter trees on either side. The track curves away to the right, out of sight, and at the corner is a five bar gate. A misty golden sunlight is lighting up the gate and the edges of the verges.

Sometimes, on the darkest days, the best place to be is in the woods. Among the noisy rattle and creak of bare branches and the constant seethe of water over rocks, there's a strange kind of peace, as if Nature has been waiting to welcome you back. 📍 Peak District, England
A moody winter scene of a wood with a small river running over rocks through the centre of the frame. The tones are greys and rusty browns, with bare winter branches arching over the water and a small beech tree to the right with its orange leaves bringing a little burst of colour.

I love this view of beautiful Bakewell, and perhaps never more so than on quiet winter mornings. Just a jumble of dreaming, higgledy-piggledy rooftops, the smoke coiling up lazily from the chimneys to meet the mist rolling down from the hills, and beneath it all, the murmuring, oblivious river.
A view of the town of Bakewell on a misty, winter morning. The river Wye runs in front of the houses at the bottom of the frame, and then the houses rise up along the hillside, smoke blooming from the chimneys.

A farewell to autumn as we move on, the final splashes of colour now fading in the woods. This was a perfectly still morning, no haste or pressure, no noise but the rush and bubble of water. I stayed long after I'd taken the shot, just watching and listening and breathing it all in. #peakdistrict
The image is of an autumnal wooded valley, with trees on both sides and a small river with waterfalls running from the centre of the image to the bottom left. There are a few yellow leaves left on the trees and orange fallen leaves on the ground. There is a slight mist hanging over the trees and the image feels ethereal (I hope!).

I wish Autumn never had to end. Not just for the colours, but also that calmness and stillness, the quiet that hangs in the air like a physical presence. But every falling leaf is like a little tick from a clock, time passing in orange swirls and flutters.
A misty autumn morning with orange leaves on the beech trees and littered on the earth below. A path meanders beneath the trees into the mist.

You can keep your big sweeping vistas, miles and miles of spectacular views. For me, there’s endless beauty in a tracery of delicate branches contoured with snow, arching over a perfectly petite gate, leading to a glimpse of hills in the beckoning beyond. That’ll do nicely. #peakdistrict
A simple metal gate at the end of a snowy track, with a snow-covered tree arching over. The view beyond is of snow-covered hills and fields, and there’s a single pop of red from the leaves of a small beech tree on the left.

What a privilege to witness the turn of the seasons before your very eyes, the brightness of autumn blazing against the white of winter. The snow fell in tiny wisps in the cold air and the leaves spiralled down beside them. As always, the click of the shutter was followed by a whispered 'thank you'.
A snowy lane disappears out of sight, an old stone wall to the left, and arching overhead are tall beech trees still carrying their bright autumn leaves of gold and orange.

The power of snow to transform the everyday into magical, to sparkle every tree and hedgerow with its own light, never fails to amaze me. The little cottage at the end of the lane became a scene from a fairytale yesterday. #peakdistrict

We have snow! I know it can be inconvenient and chilly, even if you're wearing a woolly jumper, but every year I love the sense of childish excitement it still brings to even the oldest hearts, and the bright beauty over the hills. If you have snow today, stay safe and stick close to your flock.

The #peakdistrict village of Alstonefield is a peaceful spot now, but in 1308 it was granted a market charter and became a busy centre for trade. If I shut my eyes I swear I can still hear the shouts of merchants sometimes, or maybe that’s just my family getting impatient at how long I’m taking. 🙄

This little bridge in Padley Gorge crosses the brook from one part of the woodland to another, but to stand here when the mist weaves around the old trees and the water just whispers, it doesn't take much imagination to believe it's actually the entrance to another world. 📍 Peak District, England
