The Fig Economy @figgityfigs.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

The entire US politics and news industries spend a large chunk of their waking hours on a platform designed to inflate the importance of that 18%. It's a big problem, and why you get stuff like Tammy Duckworth saying she's against impeachment because she wants to "find a compromise" on USAID $

In general, the importance of controlling a legislative chamber, and how radically more important it is to control a chamber than whatever the specific positions of any one individual caucus member, is being radically, massively underappreciated by recent BlueSky discourse.

Just weighing in from vacation to note the obvious: Ossoff's use of "Natalie" in that address was a brilliant way to play the attention economy. It works *because* it drew controversy -- by drawing controversy, it drew eyeballs & ears to a story Trump doesn't want in the news.

Also, this is a great example of the importance of public comment. Public comments on proposed rules, and agencies’ responses to them, are often cited in court judgments as part of regulatory scheme and history that help judges explain their decision.
OMB received several comments in 2020 concerning the proposed change to the termination provision. Guidance for Grants and Agreements, 85 Fed. Reg. at 49509. The largest number of these comments expressed concern that the Termination Clause would "provide Federal agencies too much leverage to arbitrarily terminate awards without sufficient cause." Id.
In response, OMB noted it "deliberated upon these requests and decided as written agencies are not able to terminate grants arbitrarilyl.I" Id.'S
OMB additionally presented in the Final Guidance's preamble two instances where the
new Termination Clause might apply. In the first instance, termination pursuant to the clause would be appropriate where, after an agency issues an award, "additional evidence reveals that a
specific award objective is ineffective at achieving program goals[.J" Id. at 49507. Termination would similarly be apt if "additional evidence... caused] the Federal awarding agency to

Tens of millions of dollars in federal funding has been cut off using this termination clause. The plaintiffs (20 states, 3 governors, and DC) did not seek relief for already-terminated grants, but it’s a very big deal to cut the gov off from this clause as it’s still being used to terminate grants.

I say “for now” because OMB is proposing changes to 2 CFR 200 to make it even worse (public comment period for these changes closed 7/13). But at this time, the current rule remains in effect and this clause in 2 CFR 200.340 can no longer be used as justification to terminate federal grants.

Judge Indira Tawari rules that OMB’s termination clause in federal grant regulations DOES NOT allow agencies to terminate grants based on program goals or agency priorities identified after the grant was awarded. Big, big win for now. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

stop. if you think the existence of a warrant is part of the conversation in any way, you cannot, by definition, argue that it makes any difference whether the guy they killed had a warrant or not. because right guy or wrong guy, an arrest warrant isn't a death sentence.

If this is accurate, even a "Trump says this, but evidence does not support it story" will be insufficient. This speech is part of an explicit threat against democracy, to overturn and control democratic outcomes. If we can't call this out clearly, we are lost.

Lindsey Graham is dead at 71. Elected U.S. House 1995 and to the U.S. Senate in 2003, Graham was Chair of the Senate Budget Committee I am hopeful that in death, he can do what he refused to do in life - help the American people: I hope this makes more budget reconciliation vehicles less likely.
