While the Gulf Coast NWS comms issue appears resolved, with the growing tropical risk was seeing way more social media traffic about the radar outages that occurred over the weekend. Feel compelled to share a thread as seeing a lot of misinformation. (1/)

I don't think privatization is the answer. Weather data such as this needs to be publicly available and free. The answer is this administration shouldn't have gutted NOAA's budget with the horrible DOGE cuts.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Do yourself a favor and search unclaimed property portals of every state you’ve ever lived in. Today I found two checks that never made it to me because of old addresses, and filed claims for both. Search “unclaimed property [state_abbreviation].gov” to avoid being redirected to finders’ sites.

Aww, thanks, Jeremy! My goal is to show them where weather obs for this area originate. Now they can say they’ve visited the actual site where the obs on their favorite weather app originate. It makes the data more real and less abstract.

Just a couple hundred miles from Mexico's southwestern coast, Hurricane Polo strengthens even further. Polo has recently recorded a central pressure of 892 millibars, making it the second most-intense Eastern Pacific hurricane on record, behind 2015's Hurricane Patricia.

Hurricane Polo's rapid intensification is seriously impressive... A special 19Z update was issued by the NHC stating that reconnaissance aircraft found that Polo's central pressure is sitting at 892 mb, the 2nd strongest EPAC hurricane by pressure only behind Hurricane Patricia (2015; 872 mb).

NOAA’s 00Z analysis confirms the strongest late season high pressure ridge on record for the Southeast. It appears the Nashville sounding observed its highest 500mb heights in its history, while Atlanta’s was only 2 meters under the previous all-time record, which occurred on 8/24/1954.
An analyzed 500 millibar weather map over the US. A large 600+ decameter ridge over the Southeast is the strongest on record for so late in the year and is driving record heat to its northwest
