#MathsToday Permutations in Discrete with a new POGIL activity from a colleague. Students gave useful feedback! Solid foundation; will need more practice. My colleague Gerry Higdon gave his 1st in a series of 6 seminars this year. Lots of excellent sequences and series! I'm excited for the rest.

Seeing Jupiter - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/28WdFrD
This image of Jupiter's southern hemisphere was captured by NASA's Juno spacecraft on the outbound leg of a close flyby of the gas-giant planet. Citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill created this image using data from the spacecraft's JunoCam imager.

The color-enhanced image was taken at 11:31 p.m. PDT on May 23, 2018 (2:31 a.m. EDT on May 24), as the spacecraft performed its 13th close flyby of Jupiter. At the time, Juno was about 44,300 miles (71,400 kilometers) from the planet's cloud tops, above a southern latitude of 71 degrees.

JunoCam takes advantage of Juno's unique polar orbit, studying the atmospheric dynamics and clouds right up to Jupiter's poles, which no spacecraft has ever done before.

#MathsToday: A couple more explorations from Julia Robinson Math Festival in Discrete. First was colored loops! The best discussion was about how many colors loops need if the arrows all have the same number. There are other (better?) ways to get at that idea, so leaving my future self that note.

#MathsToday Bumpy in both classes -- getting used to RStudio in Stat Analysis and getting to theorems with conditional probability in ProbStat. But now we get to use Bayes on Monday! Independent study student and I took a detour and did some L(2,1) labelings for fun because graph theory is great.

An Intersection of Land, Ice, Sea and Clouds - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/23p2SFp
As sea ice at far northern latitudes approached its annual maximum extent, the Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of sea ice and clouds off of Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador province. Though sea ice has been significantly below normal extent and thickness across much of the Arctic, the ice in the Labrador Sea has been relatively close to normal.

In this image, acquired on Feb. 18, 2018, the coastline, the sea ice edge, and offshore clouds all present a clear edge to distinguish one from the next. Ice hugs the coast, where it receives the full chilling effect of offshore winds, and the water is shallower and fresher than in the open sea. The swirl patterns on the eastern edges reveal areas where ice is new and has not yet consolidated into a solid sheet, so it is more susceptible to stirring by winds and by ocean eddies.

yes, but also there are real questions that should be maintained about the mathematical correctness too, there's a reason big result claims in mathematics have traditionally spawned large community efforts to understand and interrogate before the result is accepted

I am sympathetic for folks and I want us to focus on colleges that educate the vast majority of students in the US
Screenshot of article which reads: The trend does not negate the fact that college is a big expense, and families feel squeezed by the cost, especially as consumer prices continue to rise.
“It’s not like you pay for college in isolation,” said Dominique J. Baker, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware. “You still have to put food on the table and pay for housing, so if people feel like they don’t have enough money for those parts of their life, then college can seem too expensive to handle.”Screenshot of article which reads: Still, Baker said families shouldn’t be scared off by the sticker prices at a handful of elite schools when there are thousands of good colleges at all price points. Focusing on schools that cost six figures, she said, gives the wrong impression of higher education costs. But it can be useful in helping people better understand pricing.

The background is faintly green. Menus in bright yellow at the top are for About Us, Admissions, Academics, Athletics, Offices & Services, News & Events, and Student Life. Below, the Fitchburg State school name, logo, and seal are on a black background with a search menu and options for Current Students, Prospective Students, Visitors, Alumni, and Faculty/Staff, each illustrated with a large headshot.

Below that are columns of links. One is Shortcuts to admissions, online MBA, fall courses, and ordering books. The second column is news. The third is events, all athletics.

At the bottom of the page is a poorly formatted paragraph in italics describing the university. There is a green bar below that.
