Just heard people talking at the next table over. They’re voting yes on amendment 3. I said, “Do you like having a library?” People are dumb. They’ll saw the legs off the chair they’re sitting in if they think it’ll put a dime in their pocket. Stupidity can’t be helped or prevented.

How on Earth did I not read this yet? really interesting and honestly kind of brazen modelling of the entire lifecycle - downstream, data centres, upstream use - of AI. Puts AI industry at 1.1% of total global energy, about the same for global emissions. More than 10x previously stated estimates
Final Results and Concluding Thoughts
Adding it all up, we estimate that the AI sector is responsible for almost 1,900 TWh of global energy consumption in 2026. And after accounting for additional factors that we did not explicitly analyze, like the construction of new electrical substations, robotic-centric warehouses, water reclamation facilities, and other infrastructure specifically designed to support the data center buildout, it’s likely that total AI-driven global energy demand is already closer to 2,000 TWh. Even at 1,900 TWh, the AI share of total global energy use in 2026 would be roughly 1.1%. We also estimate, after adding up all the sectoral numbers and landing at roughly 650 million metric tons of AI-driven CO2 emissions, that the AI share of global GHG emissions in 2026 stands at about 1.2%, with total annual global emissions sitting at roughly 55 gigatons of CO2-eq, albeit with a wide range of figures from EDGAR to UNEP (anywhere from 53 gigatons to 58 gigatons depending on a broad array of different assumptions). As we’ve discussed already, these numbers are much higher than many others in the media and academia have guessed on the basis of simplistic calculations and naïve assumptions.

The projections up to 2030 are obviously far worse and imply a catastrophic impact to global ecological stability. ChatGPT alone “processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day worldwide.”122 The scale of AI growth and diffusion globally is truly astounding, and the industry’s corresponding ecological footprint will soon rival that of major countries like India. It's not farfetched at all to think that the AI share of total global energy demand could rise to something like 5% by 2030, rivaling and in some cases surpassing the footprint of established dominant industries. The potential consequences of this extra resource pressure on biodiversity, global warming, freshwater scarcity, and biogeochemical cycles could be absolutely staggering and devastating for the…

How would you have us, as we are?
Or sinking 'neath the load we bear?
Our eyes fixed forward on a star?
Or gazing empty at despair?
Rising or falling? Men or things?
With dragging pace or footsteps fleet?
Strong, willing sinews in your wings?
Or tightening chains about your feet?

Well...the 'wulf' is out of the bag. Professor Daniel Wakelin and I were the Middle English consultants for Robert Eggers' upcoming film Werwulf, in UK theatres on January 1st 2027!
An image of a screenshot from a webpage from IGN that reads 'Eggers did copious amounts of research on England in the 13th century for the screenplay, he co-wrote with his The Northman collaborator, Sjón. The film’s dialogue is in Middle English, although it’s been altered by dialect coach William Conacher to make it more comprehensible for the modern ear. Eggers also worked with two Middle English scholars at Oxford University, Eleanor Baker and Daniel Wakelin, who helped make the dialogue more period accurate.'

I think what rubs me the wrong way about Borges and Me is that Borges warped reality around him when he lied and played the straight man like Rod Serling in The Twilight Zone. Jay Parini warps Borges into a larger than life character and makes him into a spectacle to sell a book.

The Story of Writing @sownow.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Elie Wiesel was born on this day in 1928. He would want us to remember. And he would want us to resist the authoritarianism that leads to genocide - no matter where it happens.
Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

You are invulnerable. - Jorge Luis Borges, "To Whoever Is Reading Me"
To Whoever Is Reading Me
You are invulnerable. Have they not granted you, those powers that preordain your destiny, the certainty of dust? Is not your time as irreversible as that same river where Heraclitus, mirrored, saw the symbol of fleeting life? A marble slab awaits you which you will not read — on it, already written, the date, the city, and the epitaph.
Other men too are only dreams of time, not indestructible bronze or burnished gold; the universe is, like you, a Proteus.
Dark, you will enter the darkness that awaits you, doomed to the limits of your travelled time.
Know that in some sense you are already dead.
Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Alastair Reid

• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the

Daniel Naawenkangua Abukuri I Want Diane Seuss to Teach Me How to Become a Man congratulations: Daniel's collection, Son in a Wild God’s Arms, has been picked up by University Press of Kentucky.
I Want Diane Seuss to Teach Me How to Become a Man

after Diane Seuss’s “Romantic Poet”

by Daniel Naawenkangua Abukuri

I cherish the boys who cry in parking lots, who lean against dented Hondas
holding their faces. I love the boys who apologize to stray cats after scaring
them away. The ones who carry flowers badly, stems bent in their sweating
fists. But mostly, let’s be honest, I like Diane Seuss for the way she makes
ruin sit down beside beauty without either one pretending. Ostensibly,
becoming a man is less about hardening and more about surviving softness.
Don’t laugh. I grew up believing manhood was a locked jaw, a fist through
drywall, a silence thick as wet cement. But Diane Seuss writes men like
weathered barns still standing after years of snow and bad harvest. She
lets them ache openly. Lets them fail magnificently. Lets them drink
coffee at midnight while admitting they are lonely. And inside my own
body, under the borrowed swagger, under the deep voice I practice on
buses, there is a small frightened animal wanting permission to stay gentle.
