When we were installing the (also) Cabbagetown cycling project a few people recorded us & said they'd report us. (To who, for what? Also creepy!) They said bikeways, stop bars & crosswalks were ruining the historic character of the neighbourhood. I filmed them back & asked "what about the cars"? 🙄

Some construction background info so y'all are equipped: Paving and line marking have limited temperature windows. Ideally it's above 5-7C and dry (the hotter and dryer the better). Anything below that and the materials don't work so good. Overnight work is best due to traffic management, but..

Kalen Anderson, the CEO of BILD Edmonton Metro, which represents hundreds of companies working in the land development industry, said since the province's decision has already been made, there's no point contesting it.

"What we need to see from council is some leadership in terms of finding a very good and strong solution," she said.

Correct 🌶️🌶️🌶️ take on housing. Concrete example: if we think rooming houses and micro suites are not adequate housing, the humane response is not to outlaw them but to strive to create conditions where nobody chooses to live in them.
In housing, the most important type of urban supply is the supply that almost everyone would reject, given the choice. Will cities ever allow that housing to return? Will we ever find a formula for municipal governance that funds the public services that would improve the conditions of the housing that serves the important function of being the supply of the most inferior version of the good? The cure for the potato famine wasn’t to harvest more lobster and caviar. Maybe most people would choose more lobster and caviar if they had the resources. They might eat potatoes because they lack those resources, but they aren’t just eating potatoes because they aren’t allowed to eat lobster and caviar. They are matching their demand with the supply of an inferior good.

Local autonomy is a vital check on centralized political power. The province may have the legal authority to overrule municipalities, but legal power is not a democratic mandate. My initial thoughts on the Province’s recent directive ordering the City to reverse course on our land use bylaw.

"Who cares about an election? No one does." That's what an organizer behind Edmonton's anti-infill push believes. No wonder they pushed the Premier to throw out local democracy. Despite what Jesse Watson thinks, mandates come from elections, not his preferences.

Her claims are also false. If she spent one minute googling, she would find that the Edmonton got $0 for the zoning bylaw renewal because it was complete prior to the Housing Accelerator Fund. Goes to show how much the UCP thought about this.
"Table titled 'City of Edmonton Housing Accelerator Fund Action Plan' with three columns: Initiative, Allocation, and Actions. Row 1: Zoning Bylaw Renewal, $0, adoption and implementation of a new Zoning Bylaw (Complete). Row 2: Priority Growth Area & TOD Stimulation, $39M, infrastructure investment in redeveloping areas.

Former Mayor Don Iveson went even further on when Jespo read out a text on the show. "If there were coal under these houses, how fast do you think the GOA would move to strip mine? Premier's argument that there were no public hearings as all of this unfolded is not only disingenuous, it's a lie."

I’ll go further. The effective message here to our kids (and it’s a crying shame that Canadian young people are preoccupied with worry about finding housing when they grow up) is this: protecting current homeowners’ position by upending valid municipal laws, freezing Neighbourhoods in time, and dictating the ‘character’ of adjacent private property (good luck, that word ‘character’ is next to impossible to usefully define in law, we’ve tried) — all these factors take precedence over your future housing needs, kiddos, and by the way these factors are more important than your future cost of living.

Edmonton's small-scale infill has led to thousands of homes built for in the places people want to live, millions of dollars invested in this province, and a stable demand for construction jobs. We don't need the province making it harder to build homes. Freedom to build: that's the Alberta way.
Christine called ☎️ in about the infills going up in her community. She is not the only one.

Edmontonians have been telling me the same thing for weeks.

I am listening. Would appreciate seeing your comments below from folks who live in Edmonton. What do you think about infill and blanket rezoning?"Stacked area chart showing H1 building permits issued in Edmonton from 2009 to 2026, broken down by four neighborhood types (Downtown, Mature, Between Mature and Henday, and Outside Henday) and seven project types (Single detached, Addition/Conversion, Backyard House, Duplex to Fourplex, Fiveplex to Eightplex, 9+ Row House, and 9+ Apartment). Downtown shows minimal permits throughout the period. Mature neighborhoods peak at over 3,000 permits in 2024, dominated by single-detached homes. Between Mature and Henday and Outside Henday neighborhoods show more volatile trends, with Outside Henday reaching nearly 4,000 permits in 2023. Single-detached homes (dark purple) comprise the largest share across most neighborhoods and years, while apartment and row house projects (orange tones) remain a smaller but consistent portion.
