Failed photographer of birds in flight, patch birder North of E. Cheshire. Wistfully not a paleoanthropologist. I have not seen a Hawfinch, Puffin, Hoopoe, any Shrikes, Golden Oriole, Water Pippit. Re: my profile picture. I'm about 45yrs older!

Nuts will produce a radicle, which is known as the first root. This can be encouraged by keeping the seeds in a bucket of leaf mould and turning them gently so they don't rot. Once you see the radicle start to sprout, you can then plant the seed! #SeedGatheringSeason

Remarkable to still have a Hummingbird Hawk-moth on the wing in our garden yesterday. Much like with Clouded Yellows, 2026 has seen a big influx of these migrants with almost daily sightings here this summer. #moth #teammoth #UKWildlife #insects #nature #wildlife #photography #bugsky

Woodcock shooting season starts today in most of the UK (Scotland was 1 Sep). Continental birds have not arrived yet so any shot birds will be red-listed British breeders. GWCT suggests waiting until 1 December before targeting Woodcock. More here: wadertales.wordpress.com/2015/10/26/c... #birds

Are you a SO Energy user with a Smart Meter? Keep an eye on your monitored usage - suddenly my daily usage went up (erroneously) x4 for 12 days this month! Cust. Care (sic) eventually told me this is a known issue, which is been worked on. I'm hoping that the issue doesn't feed through to the Bill.

one of the things I find fascinating is that, even though I constantly hear about how AI (previously "big data") is going to improve everything, it's apparently no one's job to anticipate that the pavement will be full of bikes and the road full of holes at the same time as it's also bin day

A juvenile Black Tern against a very dark background (actually trees). The exposure settings were all wrong, so the bird looks like it has caught sunset and fades into the black background.

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.
