That’s one heck of a brittlegill mushroom 😍🤩! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Known for its muted red cap and white stalk, brittlegills are easily distinguished in the forest on account of their color and brittleness (they easily break into multiple pieces if dropped or thrown). This specimen rises up from brownish leaf litter with the green forest behind it.

#BlueBrewBooks This week, I’m recommending: Entangled Life - How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures By Merlin Sheldrake, 2020, 225 p. Nonfiction 5 out of 5 ⭐️ I can vouch for it being great as an ebook or paperback. Go to ALT text for a bit more…
If you’re even remotely interested in fungi, lichens, the mycorrhizal networks among trees and other plants, the ‘WoodWideWeb’ or even psychedelic psilocybin mushrooms, here’s a brilliant and very readable book for you. I loved the writing itself, which is wonderful and lyrical, and have become somewhat devoted to its amazing author. (Among other things, Sheldrake fed his manuscript to the pleurotus fungus with the goal of producing edible oyster mushrooms, making his book into an actual edible object.)

I hope you’ll enjoy this book. It’s simply dazzling.

There’s now an illustrated version as well, though I don’t know how my little book could have been any better. It’s peppered with lovely illustrations, has color plates, extensive notes, and a great index.

These were an absolute treat to find today! Successional Ear-pick fungi, Auriscalpium vulgare. #FunkyFungi #FungiFriends #Fungi #Moss #Photography
A triple-threat! Three new Ear-pick fungi sprout from an old Ear-pick fungus sprouting the more typical way from a Douglas fir cone. Another shriveled up sibling fungi lilts a bit to the right all shriveled and far less cool without anything sprouting from their noggin. Note that the 3x have a couple of other knots attempting to become fruiting body. The older fungi are a dark brown with the one sprouting children out of their head still presenting a few teeth sticking out from under their cap. The 3x younger ones have a reddish brown stem with a lighter colored tan cap. A composite of 36 pictures were focus stacked to generate this single image.
