OSTP can adopt slogans and hold as many summits as they like, but that doesn't undo the facts on the ground. Under this administration, science, institutions, and early career researchers keep losing, with near- and long-term consequences for innovation, health, economy, and national security.

Some random thoughts: Good science doesn't always need disruptors. Often, it needs load-bearing walls. You can't pivot away from a failed multi-year experiment or "iterate" your way out of a mentee's PhD. Science needs stable foundations, not churn. Don't break the people building on top of it.

It's 20 years since I was part of the inaugural class in the Georgia Tech Honor's Program. Georgia Tech is a nerd campus, so the founding director, Dr. Nobles, had a vision for an honors program that wasn't focused on grades, metrics, etc. “A program more about questions than answers."

Why are tax dollars being diverted to support R&D at private industries? Can't those industries attract their own investment? Isn't that the entire point of those private industries? Are investers so fucking greedy that they no longer want to risk their own money on tech, so they have to spend ours?

Grantmaking has leveled off, so it looks like NSF will make around 6,200 new grants—down from an average of ~11,000. That's a historic low, not seen since the 1980s, when NSF was a far smaller organization. Left was our projection three weeks ago, right is the current data.
Previous plot of NSF new grants projected FY26 would be ~6100Current data for total new grants at NSF

I've collaborated with a rheologist to know that I have zero intuition for fluid flow physics. I think it would require advanced physics, not just "treat everything as a frictionless cylinder" physics. I assume dust particles will have complex behaviors as the air currents approach surfaces.
