I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

An under-appreciated fact is the extent to which our preferences are shaped by what we perceive to be available. This matters for (among other things) debates about social mobility, immigration or the state of the public sphere.

Lovely anecdote from the Stewart Lee interview in today’s Guardian www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...
Text: “When he was young, he read a “brilliant” book, Mister Fairweather and His Family, written as a tool to help adoptive children understand their origins. “It was about a bloke, and he was bored, so he got a cat. He was still bored, so he gets a dog, and he’s still bored, so he gets a wife. He’s still bored. And then they go, ‘Well, let’s get a baby’. That book is considered an absolute disaster now because it’s not child-centric. The baby isn’t supposed to be a pet for the parents. Anyway, I looked it up on Amazon, everyone was slagging it off, ‘This book ruined my life. I wanted to kill myself.’ And then there was one really good review of it. I thought, ‘That’s what I think. It’s a really nice little book with really nice pictures.’ And I’d written that review myself, 20 years ago, and forgotten.”

How Place-Based Policy Could Counter Populist Discontent

Gerry Stoker, Daisy Blackburn, Nick Clarke, Will Jennings

Resentment felt by people in areas that have suffered from social and economic decline is a significant driver of populist backlash—‘the revenge of the places that don't matter’. An effective place-based strategy could provide something of an antidote to populist discontent. In power, populist leaders are arch-centralisers, organising government to dance to their tune. By focusing on place, UK government can respond to people's feelings of being neglected by Westminster and give them the power and tools to tackle issues that matter to their community. Drawing on a survey conducted in England in 2025, we show that, although place-based grievance is widespread, people still express pride in place and see unfulfilled potential, while negative perceptions reflect the material condition of local areas. There is demand for state intervention, but little faith in the ability of central government to deliver. In response, a place-based strategy requires a new style of multilevel governance followed by a slower, more place-sensitive push towards devolved government.
