Tweet from twitter by Lindsay Shephard (@NewWorldHominin) regarding how a person was fired by a brewery for a picture of him wearing a "Show Me the Evidence" t-shirt on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, claiming that "in Canada ... you can wear politicized shirts ... but only if you hold the correct opinion."

Tweet is followed by a tweet from Effin' Birds with meme "I already forgot who the fuck you are supposed to be."

But whoever imagines, upon this account, that masters rarely combine is as ignorant of the world as of the subject. Masters are always and everywhere in a sort of tacit, but constant and uniform, combination, not to raise the wages of labour above their actual rate. #SolidarityForever

Disbarment is an extreme remedy, and the prior disciplinary decisions did not involve misconduct that law societies would consider warrant such a sanction. Misappropriation of trusts, however, is a big “no no.”

I'm no expert on fiduciaries, but all of this strikes me as being "really bad." The standards imposed on a trustee are high, and law societies expect lawyers to be diligent with regards to any trust accounts they have set up. Mr. Rath could face very serious financial and professional consequences.

Sadly, Mr. Jivani is just one of a number of MPs that should never have been let into the CPC. Aaron Gunn, Andrew Lawton, Roman Baber, Matt Strauss are all cut from similar cloth as Mr. Jivani.

Influencers don’t accept the realities of governing. Their currency is ragebait, and compromise and tradeoffs—what governments must do—power their opposition. Their abandonment of Mr. Kenney was therefore inevitable. 2/2

Mr. Kenney sought to balance the reality of dealing with COVID and appeasing influencers and their followers. He failed, and lost support from both the influencer base and those who wanted effective pandemic responses. 1/2

I’m speaking about purity tests within a political party; that in order to be welcomed, and especially empowered, within a party, one had to accept without question a fairly narrow ideology. McCarthyism was not a party delineating the borders of a small tent, but a broader issue.

Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
So, congratulations again to Mr. Levant. I’m not convinced the LPC could have done it without him. And unless the CPC can rid itself of his and other influencers’ control, the LPC’s status as Natural Governing Party will remain unchallenged for years to come. /fin
0101
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Unlike the purity guardians on the left, the influencer movement such as Mr. Levant has monetized anger. Compromise and big tents don’t generate clicks, merch sales and donations. And so they lock the conservatives in and, as a result, concede elections to the LPC. 15/
181
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
The influencer movement, though, is not prepared to admit a mistake or reinvent the CPC. They remained more focused on selling anger, earning returns from ragebait, than on being part of a coalition offering solutions to problems. 15/
191
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Polls all showed voters were willing to choose anger/influencer over more Trudeau. But they chose a moderate offering a plan over anger alone, and current polls suggest Canadians feel that was the right choice. 14/
180
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Politicians too radical for the Ontario PCs—Roman Baber, Matt Strauss, Jamil Jivani, etc.—were made welcome. Andrew Lawton and Aaron Gunn built on this. 12/
2110
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
But when Mr. O’Toole failed to unite the influencer movement with moderate conservatives, the CPC went all-in on the influencers. Not only did Mr. Poilievre become leader, but influencer types became candidates. 12/
171
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
In 2019 and 2021, Mr. Trudeau revealed the then frailty of the LPC by barely winning minority governments and losing the popular vote. The 2024 LPC was potentially on the way to being the 2011 LPC redux. 11/
171
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
With an influencer-style leader, the CPC has managed to undo one of Mr. Harper’s goals: to end the LPC at least as the Natural Governing Party if not end it as a party altogether. The LPC was saved by Mr. Levant, not Mr. Trudeau. 10/
1112
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
In so doing, the CPC left itself open to the LPC reinventing itself with a new leader and a new direction. And voters appear to be willing, at least for now, to see where the federal government’s new direction will take Canada, especially with no real alternative offered. 9/
1111
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Mr. Poilievre has, so far, largely maintained the support of the influencers. But Canadians didn’t just want anger; they wanted better solutions. His strengths at criticizing and attacking appeal to the ragebaiters, but not to those looking for answers. 7/
1133
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
John Rustad lost the provincial election in BC in part because he came across as far right, and then lost his job because he wasn’t sufficiently far right. And federally, Erin O’Toole failed to convince voters he could lead a sane government and then was turfed for not being crazy. 7/
1141
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
This works well in opposition, but not for conservative governments. Jason Kenney was forced out because he sought compromises in government that managed to alienate both the influencer movement and regular Albertans. Even Danielle Smith may not be able to hold her base (and with it, her job). 6/
2121
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
The great thing is that you can move from ragebait item to the next one without pause. There’s no need to defend a particular solution to any problem. Instead, you can criticize the trade offs a solution requires or, failing that, switch topics to the new outrage du jour. 5/
2101
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Part of this comes from commercializing anger, something Mr. Levant excels at. Point at something that people can hate, even if you have to cherry pick to do so (and leave out nuance). The high cost of anything. That new things are built overnight. The deficit. Taxes. The list is endless. 4/
1142
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Purity tests used to be the left’s claim to fame. It was lampooned in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, but RW influencers have taken it to whole new levels, mainly by making the infighting so out in the open. 3/
2131
Timothy Huyer @tim4hire.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
TBF, Mr. Levant doesn’t deserve all the credit. But he was one of the early adopters of the “influencer” movement and remains one of the loudest voices out there. And as a result may have done more for the LPC than anyone else. 2/

Given how rare these blackouts are, I'd say those measures work. That being said, it is always good to proactively assess risks to see if better is possible. This includes assessing the availability of blackstart generation and other options both to preserve grids and restart them if needed. /fin
