A few years ago, climate considerations dominated much of the pipeline debate. Today, economic security, sovereignty and reducing dependence on the U.S. are much more prominent. That shift matters enormously for Canadian politics. Latest Hub Politics: youtu.be/JTew7n4Taj8...

90% of Albertans voting to remain in Canada would oppose Alberta joining the United States, including 84% who strongly oppose. Only 5% would support it. From our Alberta Referendum Study, fielded Sept 4-7.

Public opinion doesn’t change in a vacuum. Events change what people fear, what they prioritize and what they expect governments to do. We use the pipeline debate to explore that bigger idea on the latest Hub Politics. youtu.be/JTew7n4Taj8...

Among those voting Option 2 on Oct 19 (start the legal process toward a separation referendum), it's a coin flip: 46% would support joining the US, 46% would oppose. Remain voters are almost unanimous, 90% opposed.

What happens to the opposition when the government moves onto political territory that used to belong to someone else? That’s one of the questions we tackle on the latest Hub Politics as we look at Carney’s pivot on energy and major projects. youtu.be/JTew7n4Taj8...

Canadians support using public money to help finance major projects more than they oppose it. But support drops sharply when the trade-offs involve Indigenous agreement or majority foreign ownership. Our new Toronto Star op-ed: www.thestar.com/opinion/con...

Canada’s relationship with the United States is reshaping politics at home. Diversification, sovereignty and economic security are changing how Canadians think about pipelines, energy and major projects. That’s a big part of our latest Hub Politics conversation. youtu.be/JTew7n4Taj8...

Something from our early September study keeps coming back to me. 43% of Albertans think an independent Alberta would eventually end up American. Only 16% want that. For a lot of people, that's exactly why separation looks risky.

One of the things I keep coming back to in politics: there is no fixed centre. Threats change. Priorities change. Context changes. And public opinion moves with them. We talk pipelines, sovereignty and the changing political centre on Hub Politics. youtu.be/JTew7n4Taj8...

Canadians want big things built faster. But they don’t want every shortcut taken to get there. That tension is at the heart of a new op-ed I co-wrote for the Toronto Star, based on our latest Abacus Data/Vantage research. www.thestar.com/opinion/con...

Canadians aren’t just asking Ottawa to approve more projects. They want to see evidence that things are actually getting built. That gap between permission and visible progress may become one of the biggest tests of the major-project agenda. www.thestar.com/opinion/con...

The public mood on major projects is more complicated than simply “build, baby, build.” Canadians want more urgency and faster results, but their support is conditional on what gets built, where it gets built and how. Our new op-ed: www.thestar.com/opinion/con...
