Andrew Griffith delivers one of the all time rhetorical stinkers. My Tory conference SKETCH. thecritic.co.uk/an-h...
On reflection, it would have been better for Andrew Griffith if he’d abandoned his speech when the announcer got his name wrong. He is the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, supposedly the second most important figure in the Conservative Party. If they don’t even know what he’s called, he should take the hint.

It was an oration that party managers will describe as a cautionary tale to generations of MPs yet unborn

He didn’t, of course. Perhaps he thought that after such a slip, things could only get better. If so, it was a judgement in which he was profoundly mistaken. He was about to give one of the all-time terrible party conference speeches. It was an oration that party managers will describe as a cautionary tale to generations of MPs yet unborn. Some speeches are written terribly. Some are delivered terribly. This one was so terrible in every way that it should be sealed in lead and buried at the bottom of the ocean.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

Lest we forget... Kemi Badenoch hacked Harriet Harman's website. #pmqs #politicslive news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_poli...
Screencap of BBC website article (25 Apr 2008):

'Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman is the latest MP to become a victim of internet hacking.

An item was posted on her personal site for several hours announcing her defection to the Conservatives.

It began: "To friends, foes and fans, below is a copy of the resignation letter that landed on Gordon's desk this morning."

Beneath it was a link to a spoof Harriet Harman blog. Ms Harman was not available for comment.

Her "resignation letter" was based on the statement made by MP Quentin Davies when he defected from the Conservatives to Labour last year.

The site, harrietharman.org, appears to have been taken offline following the discovery of the rogue message, which was highlighted by widely-read Westminster gossip blog Guido Fawkes.

In 2006, then environment secretary David Miliband was forced to shut down an experimental wiki site after it was bombarded with surreal and abusive additions.'

A reminder of what came immediately after the vote (also from The Decade In Tory)
Johnson, meanwhile, demonstrated his suitability for the job by knobbing off to play cricket with some aristo pals, and then holding a massive piss-up at his farmhouse. When he did deign to return to work, it wasn’t as a prospective Prime Minister, but in his moonlighting job as a Telegraph columnist; and it was an absolute dog’s dinner. While the markets crashed, and to prevent catastrophe the Bank of England had to spend 12 percent of our entire national annual income in a single day, Johnson got squiffy and floundered through a series of confused statements that clearly demonstrated he hadn’t got the foggiest notion what to do next.
“We who are part of this narrow majority must do everything we can to reassure the Remainers”, he wrote. Is it time for another bleak-laughter break already?
His article continued: “We had one Scotland referendum in 2014, and I do not detect any real appetite to have another”, to which Scotland collectively said, “Oh is that right, pal?” and hung up another Saltire.
“British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down” Johnson assured us, whilst simultaneously insisting we would be able to prevent Europeans immigrants having those same rights to live, work, and study in the UK. We would, he explained, remain members of the lucrative single market, but also free ourselves from every bit of legislation that makes a single market into a single market.
“There is no need to invoke Article 50”, he wrote, and declared that Leave voters were not remotely anxious about immigration.
Leavers, who until now had been left to themselves to work out what Brexit meant, now found that Boris Johnson’s vision was not their own. What do you mean: we’re not leaving the single market? What do you mean: we’re not changing immigration? What do you mean: we’re not invoking Article 50?
The Johnson camp said he was “tired”, and that of course we would leave the single market, which is why they’d guaranteed we wouldn’t leave it during the campaign. And then promised we would. And then not. And now it was back again, but only because Johnson was knackered.
Johnson had performed so many juddering, crashing reversals in the last week that by this time he was basically corrugated. Whilst Britain was right in the middle of the biggest constitutional crisis we had seen since WW2, it was becoming clear the leader of the revolution hadn’t got a scooby doo, and was making up policy on the hoof, often while inebriated.
