Thinking about this I very much get the similarities. In 200 years, when the fossil fuel era is over, will people visit & marvel at the energy intensive edifices of the 20/21st centuries in the same way as we today visit the 18/19th century grand houses built on slave money?

There is nothing CONSERVE-ative about burning fossil fuels. It is quite radical, really! It radically alters the planet’s climate and causes death & destruction of entire ecosystems & life contained therein. Vote out the radical Repubs! Vote in the Conserve-active Dems!

I think a lot of the shilling for fossil fuels is not necessarily to fight against net zero policies. When (not if) policy actually comes out to outright stop/massively reduce fossil fuel dependency, I suspect all this shilling is aimed at something similar to the slave compensations.

2. If we stop trading slaves / extracting fossil fuels, we will hand an advantage to our commercial rivals, who are bound to continue (because foreigners are perfidious). 3. The slaves / planet will then be worse off, because foreign slave traders / fossil fuel producers are dirtier than ours.

Profit is the cornerstone of our socioeconomic system. What's needed is a new cornerstone. 'Maximise profit' is a tangible purpose to structure society around, no matter how destructive. Until a convincing alternative is offered, people will prefer 'maximise profit' to nothing.
