Super Mario World. First game that felt like it was properly mine instead of my brother’s. Platforming, level design, the way it uses secrets and hidden paths, all perfect. I remember as a kid thinking I could tell it was a game made by people who love games.

Such an intense way to start a chapter, but Claremont grounds us in the perspective of Illyana, a frightened child being held by her brother Colossus, by having the very first bit of text be her observing how her brother’s metal skin feels cold. It’s such a smart writing decision, I love it.

One of Hideo Kojima's real talents is that he would have exactly this idea but the stew would be dropped off by a drone that sings a little jingle which can alert enemies if they're in range. You then get a phone call from a nuclear scientist who warns you not to eat too much starch and dairy.

So the writing in the Claremont run is great, as is the art, but I want to specifically shout out the coloring. It’s so vibrant, it really makes these illustrations pop.

JESUS CHRIST. I heard jokes about how misogynistic Carol Danvers’s pregnancy plot was, and it being summarized earlier this issue made that clear, but I wasn’t expecting this scene. It feels like the writers apologizing for how poorly that storyline was done.

Proteus is my favorite villain from Marvel comics so far. It’s strange and borderline slapstick but there’s genuine menace. I was actually scared for the X-Men who were facing him.

One thing the Claremont run is teaching me is that comics were casual with time skips, because what do you mean the X Men were just stuck on a ship hanging out for six weeks? What was that like for them? For the other people on the ship???
