FDA (20 years ago): This milk has been sourced from a meticulously inspected dairy farm, and has been through a certified pasteurization process. FDA (today): Look, it's liquid, and it's from a cow. At least that's what they tell us. It's fine, probably.

I never would have predicted that cutting 20% of the staff at the federal agency that makes sure our food is safe would result in a bunch of our food being declared unsafe.

Nobody talks about how we're all paying $15 for sandwiches now and just pretending that's normal. Five years ago that same sandwich was $8. The price doubled and the only explanation we got was "supply chain issues" which apparently means "forever."

And those ensemble characters are often misused for stunts by the arc creators. Usually death, but often giving super powers to characters that should never have powers, like Mary Jane and Flash Thompson.

It’s sad that the only metric for a “good” movie these days is money. Will they make the same arguments when it’s the #1 movie on HBO in a couple of months?

“Things aren't what they used to be' is the rallying cry of small minds. When men say things used to be better, they invariably mean they were better for them, because they were young, and had all their hopes intact. The world is bound to look a darker place as you slide into the grave”

Fun fact: this movie gave us the Chupacabra Species was released in Puerto Rico on July 7, 1995 A month later, Madelyne Tolentino reported seeing a strange creature near the town of Canóvanas, which she herself described as being similar to the alien in Species
The first sketch of the cryptid later named the chupacabra. It's a crude pen drawing with labels pointing to it:

"Phosphorescent bright colored spine-like appendages that run over the body from head to the end of the back. Spine colors change constantly from red to blue to yellow to green to orange and violet. Body colored by fine grey fur with darker spots. Strong feet with claws. 4 to 5 feet tall. Big slanted red eyes. Small holes for nostrils, lipless mouth. No ears, only auditive holes. Thin arms with three-fingered hands with claws."

It's signed Madeline Tolentino and dated 9/12/95

I wrote this almost 11 years ago theweek.com/articles/444...
When heavy military equipment is taken from its original context and placed in the hands of a domestic law-enforcement agency with little training in wartime scenarios, it becomes nothing more than an instrument of intimidation. It simply has no other purpose. Wearing jungle camouflage in an urban setting, pointing guns at civilians, driving around pointlessly in an armored personnel carrier — all of these egregiously violate military best practices. This is playing soldier dress-up to scare the pants off the locals — except the guns are real.

Notice also how many of these riot cops have their faces completely covered by gas masks and insect goggles. That is almost never seen in recent wars, because covering the face makes a soldier look less human, which is directly at odds with modern counterinsurgency thinking.

But covering the face to dehumanize the enemy is a common feature in first-person shooter games (like Half Life 2 and the Killzone series), where the player often has to slaughter them by the score. Doing it to oneself is, I think, a deliberate effort to broaden the emotional distance between law enforcement and the people who are being forced into submission.

It turns out that when you put normal cops into soldier gear, you don't get soldiers. You get paramilitary goons.

Agreed. Sometimes it’s okay to just enjoy things and move on. What’s the cultural impact of the Fast and the Furious franchise? Other than the occasional meme or joke about “Familia”, do you ever see cosplay, fanfic, collectibles? Yet it spawned 10 movies and billions of dollars
