When I worked in a cafe in NE Seattle, I saw that the bulk of our customers were from the neighborhood and just walked to our location. Most of the cars parked in front were by people who never frequented our or any other store. Cars do not drive business (pun intended).

If you adopted, as your guiding heuristic, "not a single voter knows a single thing about policy or politics," you wouldn't be entirely accurate, but you would be closer to the truth than the impression most people who follow politics have.

I hate that we’re having to think in these terms, but the evidence seems to be bearing out that steep fare hikes are less damaging to ridership than service cuts.

2025 was brutal for US transit. Agencies faced budget deficits, flat ridership, and open hostility from the White House. I wrote a series of stories outlining ways to help transit endure. Lesson #1: Whatever you do, don’t cut service. Riders will leave – permanently. Here are a few others 🧵

The Last Thing US Transit Agencies Should Do Now
Rising costs and widening deficits as pandemic aid runs out are challenging bus and train operators in many cities. But cutting service needs to be a last resort.

RENEW WAR ON SANTA CLAUS
Asbury Park, N.J. July 8 - War on Santa Claus has been renewed by the School of Methods of the New Jersey Sunday School Teachers' Association in session here. The battle against the children's idol of Christmastide was begun last summer on the ground that the time-honored institution of Kris Kringle takes the minds of the young scholars from the religion [sic] significance of the day.
Last year the teachers sought to have substituted a model Christmas festival, in which the stereopticon played a prominent part and the jolly old saint was banished. It failed Now the teachers have a new scheme of a "living Christmas tree." Teachers and scholars of Sunday schools are to stand in serried ranks upon a circular platform built in tiers, each holding a Christmas tree branch, laden with candles and gifts. At a given signal all are to step down and carry their branches through the audience, distributing the gifts.

Some have argued that traffic cameras are a regressive tax on low-income people. While I agree that fines could be somewhat commensurate with income, maybe people of any income could just stop driving 15 mph above the speed limit?

Reminder: more than 60% of four year institutions let in at least 75% of applicants. A school with an admissions rate of 65% is one of the more selective schools in the country. College admissions shit is entirely elite neuroses about like 100 schools, or total bullshit.

It's funny how there's an inverse correlation with nominally supporting the idea of "degrowth" and the outcomes of the associated policies. To be clear, DOGE = degrowth, decel, and stagnation. Big fiscal policies like the Green New Deal = growth, acceleration, and abundance.

But in these cases, this isn't even what happened - the people in question chose to cancel themselves (among liberals) for whatever reason. /end

Why was the Chicago O’Hare multi modal transit center / rental car facility built backwards? It is a LONG walk from the terminal transit station (red) to the Metra station (blue). Terminal transit and bus bays should have been on the east side to enable shorter walks to Metra. Stupid design.
