There comes a point where AI is a moral choice. It can do things like translate at a relatively competent level, at least enough to satisfy curiosity. Which means you have to respect the source work enough to not use it. If the creator chooses to offer an AI translation, I guess that’s another story

Like, I get it, the temptation is there if you have no other viable option. But personally? If I can’t read or watch something legally translated by a human, then I just… pick something else to read or watch. There’s a whole world of things to choose from.

Since I see everybody else doing it, my 9. Kinda hard to limit it down, for example Pokemon was a big part of childhood, but Digimon outshined it in the end for me. On the other hand, I prefer Saint Seiya over DBZ overall, but the latter was more influential during my younger days.

the thing monolinguals don't understand is that it is literally impossible to accurately translate everything. all translations are fundamentally rewrites of the original author's work and you can either accept that or bust out Genki I and II and start studying

When translators say they hate doing MTPE because it's faster to just do it from scratch and results in better material, we're not exaggerating. If I was a proofreader and a translator handed me this, I would immediately tell the PM to fire them. No translation is genuinely better than an MT in loc.

This is true of many art forms, but speaking as a translator, a big part of the job is absorbing details. To properly understand the context and flow of a story and its dialogue, you spend large amounts of time thinking about the characters, their motivations, the world they live in, etc.

English speakers DRASTICALLY overemphasize Japanese honorifics and personal pronouns. I think because they don't exist in English, they want rules they can understand. Honorifics and personal pronouns are not rules-based. They are vibes-based. They are a way to add decoration and flavor. It's fine

RIP to an absolute legend. Many amazing roles, but for me the one that always comes to mind is Taurus Bulba from Darkwing Duck. He had such menacing gravitas in his voice, one of the few cartoon villains that kinda spooked me as a kid.

I could write volumes about the Orientalism inherent in expecting translated Asian texts to be somehow intrinsically different in vocabulary and metre to native English. They're not foreign and exotic to local readers, why on earth would you want them to be different for you if you want authenticity

It feels like when the names are made up a lot of people default to just trying to get as close to the katakana as they can no matter how weird that winds up looking. I'd argue you're better off looking for ways to hide that while respecting the general linguistic feel of the setting.

Yeah pretty much the only reason is that Japanese law makes it extremely difficult to fire permanent employees, if not for that, Japanese game companies would absolutely have been doing layoffs like everywhere else. LRP Very awesome presentation! There is so much thought that goes into character voice with localization. I always appreciate companies that are willing to step away from the source to some extent and encourage creative choices for the sake of authentic equivalence.
