Looking back, I shouldn’t be surprised, but I’ve never lost interest in something quite as fast as Sasaki & Peeps S2. It’s wild how we started with ‘white-collar dude finds talking magic bird in a pet shop’ and ended up with… a bad fever dream of tropey tropes.

Man, I really wanted to like Dandivine… but it just felt so flat. The direction, the animation, the jokes. Nothing really popped like you’d expect from a robot show. I wasn’t sure what to think. It really just made me want to dig up my GaoGaiGar and Dai-Guard disks.

I stayed at a hotel near the Nintendo Museum and found a guestbook, so I drew something in it. Everyone there was incredibly kind and welcoming. It became a wonderful memory for me. I’m truly grateful to them—and to Nintendo for making this experience possible.

I feel so bad for whoever is translating Kamen Rider My-th. The translation is good but the subs are ruined by what I assume are Japanese mandates for silly romaji terms in ALL CAPS. I turned off the subs, it was driving me nuts.

There comes a point where AI is a moral choice. It can do things like translate at a relatively competent level, at least enough to satisfy curiosity. Which means you have to respect the source work enough to not use it. If the creator chooses to offer an AI translation, I guess that’s another story

Like, I get it, the temptation is there if you have no other viable option. But personally? If I can’t read or watch something legally translated by a human, then I just… pick something else to read or watch. There’s a whole world of things to choose from.

Of course Zoids, Gaogaigar, and Symphogear dominate the top spots. Nothing more formative and endearing to me. They remain the only shows I shelled out stupid amounts of money for their Japanese Blu-ray boxes because I always want to rewatch at random times. If I had kids I’d raise them on those lol

Since I see everybody else doing it, my 9. Kinda hard to limit it down, for example Pokemon was a big part of childhood, but Digimon outshined it in the end for me. On the other hand, I prefer Saint Seiya over DBZ overall, but the latter was more influential during my younger days.

the thing monolinguals don't understand is that it is literally impossible to accurately translate everything. all translations are fundamentally rewrites of the original author's work and you can either accept that or bust out Genki I and II and start studying

When translators say they hate doing MTPE because it's faster to just do it from scratch and results in better material, we're not exaggerating. If I was a proofreader and a translator handed me this, I would immediately tell the PM to fire them. No translation is genuinely better than an MT in loc.

Btw I think the 'Draw This Then Die' anime explores this theme very well. I relate to Teshima and how she had magma boiling inside that cooled down over time. Keeping that inner fire stoked can be tough. It makes me wonder if becoming a teacher/mentor is the final destination. Pass it along instead.

I appreciate people who look on the bright side of it all. Seeing fans who share their excitement over something is always refreshing. Not to say that negativity is bad. We need forms of stress release, too. It's just difficult to find the proper balance, especially on the internet lol

Anyway, just some idle thoughts I was having. Sometimes being passionate is a boon, other times it makes you feel silly when no one else is engaging at the same level you are. There's always a looming sense of meaningless in translation work, especially when it's not a mainstream title.

That's what makes social media such a minefield. Creatives thrive on positive comments, but negativity is such a downer. Viewers may only spend 22 minutes on an episode, but that can be like a week of work for the people behind it. And that applies to all forms of media.
